The African-American Film Festival celebrates its fifth season this year with the theme of "Africans in the Diaspora." The selections include Jamaican and Brazilian films.

James Drayton, its founder and producer, expands its audience to include a segment for the high school students. Films:

"The Harder They Come": March 18. This 1972 Jamaican crime film, directed by Perry Henzell, brought reggae music and Jamaica to the world. The film stars reggae singer Jimmy Cliff, who plays Ivanhoe Martin, a character based on Rhyging, a real-life Jamaican criminal who achieved fame in the 1940s. The soundtrack to the film is considered a breakthrough for reggae in the United States. In 2005, it was developed into a stage musical.

"Quilombo": March 25. This 1984 Brazilian drama film directed by Carlos Diegues tells the story of revolution and conflict set in the 17th century Brazil. It’s an epic tale of an attempted utopian society, and the inability of that utopia to survive in the face of racism, colonialism, and militarism. The film features a score written and performed by composer/singer Gilberto Gil.
