Tuesday’s Oscar nomination announcements seem to have been the cherry on a pretty nice year for a local resident, Christopher Plummer.

Plummer, who lives part-time in Manalapan, was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his work as author Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station. Plummer plays opposite Helen Mirren as his wife, as the two battle over Tolstoy’s will in their waning years. Mirren was also nominated Tuesday as Best Actress.

Plummer has also contributed to a second nominated movie for 2009, the Best Picture candidate Up, in which he plays the antagonistic explorer Charles Muntz. He was also the title character in the Terry Gilliam film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and the wisened “1″ in the Tim Burton animated film 9.

Through all that, Plummer still had time to make an appeal to a local landmark — the Royal Poinciana Theatre on Palm Beach. Here he discusses saving the local theater:
