There aren’t many chances to get excited for a rock biopic. It’s not like these things come out very often like, say, a movie about robots blowing stuff up.
So you’ll excuse me if I am a little giddy about seeing the trailer for The Runaways. And considering it stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, who were last together in the same movie in a little thing called New Moon, my giddiness is remarkable.
But check this trailer out — Stewart appears to be dead on as Joan Jett, guitarist and future rock icon, while Fanning seems to really make the leap into adult-ish roles as lead singer Cherie Currie.
(Thanks to Thompson on Hollywood for the link!)
For those who don’t know about the Runaways, a little history:
The band was formed by Jett and Sandy West in 1975, and the two teens introduced themselves to impresario/producer Kim Fowley, who decided to help them put together an all-girl rock band. (Oscar fans, Fowley is being played by Michael Shannon, last seen in his Academy Award-nominated part in Revolutionary Road.)
Two questions:
• Is Fanning actually singing? Whoever it is has Cherie’s voice pretty solidly down.
• Who’s playing Lita Ford, who happens to be the OTHER future big-time rock star in the Runaways? (Actually, imdb.com helped me here: Lita’s played by Scout Taylor-Compton, best known for playing Laurie in the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot.)
