ATHENS, Greece (AP) — British electro-pop group Depeche Mode said Thursday it has canceled another four concerts in eastern Europe after their lead singer fell ill before a show in Athens.

A statement on the group’s Web site said Depeche Mode would not hold performances in Bucharest, Sofia, Belgrade and Zagreb, scheduled from Saturday to Thursday.

It said the decision was due “to further complications from singer Dave Gahan’s severe bout of gastroenteritis.”

Gahan, who turned 47 last week, was taken ill moments before he was to appear on stage and was hospitalized overnight Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of two shows north of Athens. Greek concert organizers say he is being treated abroad.

Turkish organizers also canceled the band’s concert in Istanbul Thursday.

The Depeche Mode statement said Gahan is undergoing further tests. It said an announcement would be made shortly in regard to rescheduled dates or final cancellation of the concerts in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia.

The British band emerged in the early 1980s, releasing 46 singles and a dozen albums.
