Despite monsoon-like conditions that sent fans scattering just an hour before the show, Toby Keith kept a full house of fans on their feet for much of his two-hour set. Thankfully the rain cooled the atmosphere so the sauna-like conditions at Cruzan Amphitheatre weren’t quite as bad as usually.

Not that anyone on America’s Toughest Tour complained.
But Keith looked a little wiped out when he took the stage shortly after 9. I could be wrong, but I think Keith spent part of the day partaking of our excellent fishing. His nose rivaled Rudolph’s and he kept his hat low over his eyes to soften the spotlight. He seemed to be dragging just a bit at first, but he got his second wind about five songs into the set and he never looked back.
The show started with his annual Ford Truck commercial – always one of my favorite parts of the show. This one featured Keith in a competition with some KISS look-alikes, a trio of pop singing boys, an easy-listening Yanni type, and a rapper. Guess who won – and who showed off all of Ford’s features while he was at it?
An oversize Ford tailgate was part of the set this year, more subtle than in previous years when Keith actually shared the stage with a truck. Ford has been Keith’s sponsor for years, and as they say, if it ain’t broke …
Keith is incredibly fit: not many performers could strut the stage for two solid hours the way he does, and look stronger at the end of the night than at the beginning. And he’s a performer that couples can agree about. The guys like his voice and vibrato and the gals like everything else.
Keith is the anti-Forrest Gump: With Keith, life is not a box of chocolates, it’s a case of Bud, and you always know what you’re going to get.
The long-legged Louisiana boy Trace Adkins took the stage just before 8 in a tight black T-shirt and his signature black hat, a belt buckle the size of a dinner plate adoring his Wranglers. His long blonde hair – it reaches the middle of his back – was loose and blowing in the light wind that followed the rain.
The more I see of Adkins, the better I like him. Heck, I even overlook “Badonkadonk”.
Why?
Adkins pours every bit of himself into his performance. You can see it in his face: he doesn’t sing with any greater passion on an awards show or at the Grand Ole Opry than he does at a show. He has a work ethic you simply have to admire.
His 50 minute set delivered the hits an Adkins fan wants to hear – “Chrome”, “Badonkadonk” – plus some real artistry – “You’re Gonna Miss This”, arguably one of the best songs of the year, and of his career. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for an artist who has such an understanding of the human condition.
Because this concert was fueled by testosterone, we didn’t get to hear as many love songs as I would like. I’m actually grateful Keith included a couple!
I take that back: He included his two most powerful love songs at the end; they were his love songs to the troops, and to the U.S.A. He said there would be surprises and one came then, when Adkins returned to the stage to sing a duet of “The Angry American”.
That was the pinnacle. And a perfect cap to the night.

We traveled all of the way from Pennsylvania to surprise my country music loving daughter on her 16th birthday. We both loved watching and listening to Trace. I guess I should have done more research on Toby. His music videos and comments were obscene. My daughter asked to leave before his show was over. The comments about hookers and other unmentionalble were unnecessary. I was sad for the many youth that were exposed to the events of the evening. Too bad that someone with talent feels that he needs porn to entertain his audience. Never again.
I thought trace was a lot more ornery than toby. especially in his posture and when he grabed himself while in jacksonville.

Trace adkins is truly one of country musics most talented and promising superstars and does have a one-of-a-kind Work Ethic!!!!
Toby Keith, on the other hand, as was stated above—is nothing but a foul-mouthed poor excuse for White Trash — his singing is juvenile, has no voice to speak of, can’t play the guitar–fakes it; and all he dies is pander testosterone to the macho in-bred bully mentalities!
Keith does have one of the foulest mouths in Country Music and it’s no surprise he doesn’t get “along” with the Nashville “Scene”—Keith has had a chip on his shoulder over what HE feels is the way Nashville “snubs” him. The reason they “snub” him is because of his immature juvenile temper tantrums he throws whenever he doesn’t get “what Tovy wants” —like the time at the awards show he got pissed he didn’t win one award–so he goes down into the bar and proceeds to get drunk with willie Nelson and WHINE about not getting the award, as he is picked for the entetainer of The Year Award, which he missed picking up—being drunk in the bar!!!
Now he’s created this huge stink where he told Chris Kristofferson to shut up and not say any of the “LEFTY STUFF” at another awards show—then LIES and said he DIDN’T say it. Kristofferson’s wife said he DID. When a Nashville newspaper, The Tennessean, reported it—he showed up at another awards press conference and threatened the reporter that simply reported the story–Mr. Peter Cooper-another Country musician AND writer for The Tennessean who up until that minute, had been a friend of Keith’s! Keith is totally out of touch with reality and just a huge immature jerk who USES the American Troops to just sell his music pandering patriotism for money!!!!!
If you don’t like Toby then DON’T go to his show, do yourself a favor and spend your $$ elsewhere. As for not having talent, there seems to be a lot who will disagree with you rather than agree with you. I really hate it when folks think that they know more than they do. That’s why each has an opinion I guess. But have you tired cutting grass lately? It might do you some good to remember the old adage if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything.

You get “Toby” at a “Toby Show”…I have been to several of his shows and am extremely entertained at each one! Anyone who has heard Toby’s songs know that they deal with “adult themes”…as does most of country music. Not porn, not obscene, but definitely “adult”. To say he uses “porn” to entertain his audience is not a true depiction of his show – which ROCKS each and every time!!!
I love that he doesn’t compromise and just lays it out there! To paraphrase Toby’s song…He’s a hayseed, plowboy, farm kid cowboy, roughneck (his Daddy was a roughneck too!) who runs around with hillbilly girls when the weekend sets in his hillbilly world. You better be ready when the sun goes down – that’s when Toby brings Country to town! And oh man! How he brings it!!!! LOVE THAT RASCALLY TOBY!!
What was up with the fan who made Toby mad at the concert on 6/27/09? Toby gave him the finger and invited him to the stage, then left the stage to go down and confront the guy. Security stepped in and quickly escorted the guy away. What happened? Why is this nowhere in the news?
Tristan – get over it. Toby has the best voice in country music, and has made it just fine on his own, without the Nashville butt-kissing. I’m thrilled that Toby and Trace are together this year, but it’s Toby that I go to see as many times as I can every year!
Ken – Toby invited the guy up to confront him because he threw a beer all over the stage, was flipping Toby off, and then grabbed his wife and tried to make her leave – that’s when Toby came off the stage. There is a video of it all on YouTube.

I was in the 8th row and was pretty close to him coming off the stage but I didn’t see what precipitated the whole thing.

Read the article in the USO magazine about how the soldiers react when they see him in the Forward Operating Bases…you know, the ones 5 miles from the Pakistan border? If he were “faking” his support of the military, I dont’ think he’d be going to FOB’s. Read how he remembers the guys and gals he meets overseas when he meets them again at his shows. Read their take on his songs about the military. I think they may have a more accurate view of if he’s using them for monetary gain than any of us would.
Oh and “getting fat”?! Just had a meet & greet with the man and had my arm around his waist…not an ounce of fat on that guy…SOLID MUSCLE! And the guns on that guy! Whew!

This review and Tody were way off! First, his vioce was horrible. Second, same old nonesense song slection. Third, he was drunk and forget ballads. Fourth, he went off the stage to do what? Fist fight another drunk man in a cowboy hat? That was bull. Toby’s vioce was rough and without any feeling. He has so many good songs; pump jack, does not make me a bad guy, and on and on, but same old-for five years now, song selection. Lastly, leaving the stage to go after a fan-that is unheard of in country music. Waylon Jennings, John Cash, and the other bad boys of country, outlaws of country, would not do some bull like that. Very bad concert-did this reporter even go to the concert because the review is way off-like Toby’s music.
Yvonne…I agree Toby has TONS of great music that the majority of people will never hear cause ya gotta play the hits…that’s what people come to hear…every artist does it…the hits are what draw people in. As for his voice sounding horrible…guess we were at different concerts also what ballad did he forget words to in West Palm? Drunk or drinking…or is it all the same to you? I have NEVER been dissappointed with a Toby show…but we all are looking for different things I guess!

Everyone is entitled to like different things, if you don’t like Toby or the person you think he is, then don’t go to anymore of his concerts. If you think that they aren’t, you are kidding yourself. We can’t blame them for this and the people responsible for it is us. As for those who think Toby’s show is crude and were embarrased for their kids, what were you thinking taking your kids to his concert in the first place. Do you listen to his music? He is definetly geared towards adult audiences. I don’t know what you people expect from live entertainment. Toby is the first country concert I have ever went to, I am a rock and roll chic, and I have been to many concerts. Have these people ever been to a concert before? I have seen Toby three times and have never seen him drunk or forgetting any of the words. I prefer Toby’s songs that you don’t hear on the radio, I think the actually showcase his voice better, in fact that is what I listen to on my mp3 player, I don’t even have any of his popular songs on my player. Everybody has different tastes in music, which I believe is a good thing. I don’t like rap or hip hop, I think they should learn to play 3 chords, however, I would not launch personal attacks on those people who do like this type of music.
A very complete review. The show was terrific, but I think promoters got it backwards. Toby should have opened for Trace Adkins who did a far better show!
I think alot of people on here leaving reviews about the Toby-Trace concert at cuzan werent at the same concert that me and my gf were at . Trace rocked the house , Toby put on 1 hell of a show and some of you saying that Toby was (Drunk) or drinking ..Ah ,Hello , its a dammm country concert thats what u do, Drink ..Ive been to many concerts there .Country , Rock etc and its the norm to drink. Toby had a great voice mayb he was a lil tired ..give Toby some credit where credit is due. If u feel the need to bash trace or toby maybe next time when 1 or the other is here again (Dont go) ..
Well, I enjoyed the show very much. I thought both performers were on and did a great job. I do have a problem with ticket/Beer prices though, the 2 $25.00 lawn seats wound up costing over $40.00 a piece and then the beers are $9.00 ea. Wow, cash a hundred and see an outdoor concert, drink one beer and screw tipping the bartenders, what a great way to spend a Saturday Night. Thanks LiveNation, you make it all possible, I bet we wouldn’t even have concerts if you weren’t allowed to rip everyone off.
The funny part about all the negative comments on Toby’s concert is that all of you paid for a ticket… and no matter what you’ve said about him he still got paid… So you guys can continue to talk smack about Toby Keith but remember you paid for all of his beers that night… Evidentally the people on this site have never listened to Toby Keith’s music before (really listen,) he tell’s it like it is… I’m sure when your kids are listening to R.Kelly and all the other non country perverts you forget that all Toby’s preaching is the USA!

Yes, I was at the concert. No, I wasn’t surprised. This is the fourth time I’ve seen Keith in concert so I knew that he ‘d be using some profanity, and making some off-color comments.
I actually thought his voice was better this year.
I’m sorry for anyone who expected a different show than the one they saw, like the parents that came down to surprise their daughter. Keith’s fan base is male-dominated and so his commentary contains lots of references to drinking, fighting and chasing women.
Concert goers may have assumed they’d see a Toby like the one they hear on the radio, and honestly, radio only plays a small percentage of songs the artist releases. And not even the best of that artist, necessarily, because radio wants to homogenize the content to keep listeners happy.
Some fans want to hear the hits. Others like it when a performer goes off-script and plays a song that wasn’t a radio hit. Toby likes to change the lyrics to say something racy, usually sexual in nature.
Sure, if it were up to me, I’d make him sing a totally different set list. Rodeo Moon, I Know She Hung the Moon, Crash Here Tonight, Just the Guy to Do It, My List, Pick “Em Up and Lay “Em Down, Who’s That Man, Too Far This Time, Wish I Didn’t Know Now, Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You, Ain’t No Right Way, Me Too.
I believe that it takes all kinds of people to make up this crazy world, and I defend Toby’s right to say what he wants, just like I would defend your right to say whatever you want, no matter how wrong that might be or how much I might disagree.
There’s no question that Keith sweats testosterone, and that his show is not G rated. There were fewer kids in the audience than usual, which I thought was a good thing. If I had a child younger than, say, 12, I would skip Toby and go straight to Rascal Flatts or Brad Paisley. Both of those shows are much more family friendly.
I’m not sure what happened with the fan at the show. I only heard him say something like, “Come over here and I’ll kick your head in.” Keith did have an altercation with a fan at a show in February. You can hear, in Toby’s own words, what he says happened.
You can also hear what he has to say about the Ethan Hawke-Peter Cooper event regarding what he did or didn’t say to Kris Kristofferson.
If you didn’t like the show, you can send a clear message by not buying his concert tickets next time.
To Goddess, I have to say: Your comments here are worse than anything seen or heard on stage. You resort to name calling in the very first sentence – and you’re not addressing the subject (Toby) you’re picking on someone for saying what she thinks (Cara). I do wonder, if you dislike Keith so much, why you went to the concert in the first place. So you could bash him after the fact?
People who are only able to call names and point fingers and use profanity usually don’t have any facts or a working vacabulary. But like I said, I defend your right to say whatever you want. And I do like to read all your comments, so keep ‘em coming.

For the record, I’m not saying either way what happened with Kristofferson or Hawke or the fan in Pennsylvania. I wasn’t there. I didn’t witness it. What I did say is you can hear what TOBY said, in his own words, about it when I asked him about it.
And you can also hear what he said when I asked him whether he would join the service if he was 18 today, and you can hear, in his own words, what he said about that too, and whether he’d let his 12 year old son join the Marines.

I’m not a Toby addict, and I certainly don’t believe everything anyone tells me.
Also, I’m not sure what “facts” you’re talking about. Here’s one of the only statements I can find: “The Star Tribune claims the 72-year-old music icon admits that his wife Lisa remembers what happened.” But she is never quoted anywhere that I can find. If you can find a quote from Lisa I would love to see it. That would be a fact.
Funny how the negative posters have the same writing style…makes me think that it’s the same writer over and over again…is it hard to be such a mean spirited people? To throw insults (which is not a review of the concert) is hardly the way to get your point across. Most people will stop reading when they start reading angry rants.

You might also want to read the entire story about the Kristofferson incident, but again, the truth will deflate your stance. Kristofferson’s wife THOUGHT she remembered an incident, but never went into detail…Kris though, said he didn’t recall it happening nor did Willie Nelson who was also at the event. Calling Willie Nelson a liar? He recanted the evening the same way that Toby did.
Did you negative folk know that George Strait requested the artists who would salute him at the show in which he was honored with the Artist of the Decade? He requested Toby Keith be there and perform one of his songs. So there goes yet another argument that the Nashville crowd doesn’t want anything to do with him…I’d say King George is pretty much the cream of the crop in Country stars and he requested Toby perform on the show honoring him.

And cara, what you are doing, in therapeutic terms (I’m a licensed clinical psychologist) is “projection” ……..where one projects their own flaws & faults onto others to “distract” and “deviate” from owning their own shit. Borderline Personalities are the ones most effective at this and there really is no treatment for a Borderline Personality, I’m quite sorry to say.
But through some regular and intense therapy for a good length of time (3-4 years usually, with an effective therapist versed in the psychopathic antisocial adroitness of Borderlines) —you might see some improvement IF you are willing to be honest with that therapist and actually do the “work” suggested!
It’s also a very characteristic trait of almost every Borderline Personality to carry on obsessive compulsive arguments just as you seem to be so fluent at doing………………

Toby Keith rocks! I go to every concert I can. the question is why do you pay to see him if you don’t like him. I am not patriotic at all but his voice is amazing and it’s nice to see a man who is still …well…a man! He’s hot!

I went to see Trace Adkins who IS a responsible adult and DID seek treatment for HIS alcohol problem several years ago and has been clean & sober and practicing Recovery ever since. Adkin’s actions and work both show this.
Keith’s actions and works both show the opposite.
(But there is method behind all of God’s actions and perhaps this Tour with the two of them togehter is “just what the doctor ordered” to let Keith see what he really needs to do to get his act together.)

I don’t care what any of the complainers say about Toby Keith. He is a whale of a guy and I truly love him and his songs. Can’t wait to go to his concerts that are close enough to attend. I don’t buy anyone’s cd’s any more except Toby’s. He is from Oklahoma and I live about 65 miles from him in Oklahoma. He is true to his state and his people and for this I admire him. Unlike Reba, Garth, Vince and others, he still lives in Oklahoma and has not moved to Nashville or other surburbs in Tennessee. Oh, I know Garth has a home in Oklahoma but he still lives most of the time in Tennessee. So, stop bad-mouthing Toby and just don’t buy a ticket to his concerts, go see someone that you do like. Keep singing the good songs, supporting the troops, promoting Ford and OU Sooners, and be the good guy that I believe you are, Toby.

Drove 21/2 hours missed daughter’s party to go see Toby’s concert at last min. and what a huge disappointment!!!!!!!! Hated the place we went what a joke! Beyond a billion people hiked a freakin 50 miles from where we parked through dirt and rocks and bottles to get to the front gate. By this time a cold beer was well desired and needed to throw down $11.00 just for that! Get to seats and show starts after all that still kept saying it’s gonna be great……..Toby starts and he looks and sounds like I don’t want to be here and can’t wait till I’m done. What a night!!!! Stayed for 4 songs milked the 11.00 beer and said screw this I’m gone.
What a joke drove back 21/2 hours and thought what a waste. Sorry Toby you felt so whatever…. but if your not enjoying what your doing do something else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel sorry for all the whiners. when it comes down to it, you still paid for the concert. Do you think Toby cares whether or not you like it? Yeah, don’t think so. All I could day to them was: I enjoy being a drunk and if you get angry over it, then let me have another one for you! You complain about an artist that sings about violence, drinking and machismo actions; yet you fail to understand that by nature we as humans are attracted to violence and hatred. We need someone to hate, and amuse ourselves in violence. You complain about an artist that does not wish to be part of a pussy footing subculture that forgets what country music is all about. This is why Toby Keith is at the top of the charts. He brings to us what we have all been missing. I did not even like country music until I heard TK!
