The artist: Thin Lizzy
The album: Still Dangerous Live at the Tower Theater Philadelphia 1977 (VH1 Classics)
The spin: Phil Lynott was a rock star to the fullest extent of the term. He had attitude, charisma, and a unique vocal style that made him instantly recognizable. He also held true to the “hope I die before I get old” maxim with his untimely death in 1986 at the age of 36.
Still Dangerous chronicles a classic show that took place in Philly in 1977 during their “Bad Reputation” tour. It’s Thin Lizzy at their peak. They were torchbearers at a time when disco ruled the scene.
The album was originally released in 1978, but ten of the tracks have been taken and re-mastered for this version. The result is magnificent. You’ll hear the hits such as “Jailbreak” “The Boys are Back in Town”, and “Bad Reputation.” In addition tracks like “Opium Trail” and “Soldier of Fortune” remind you how great Lizzy was especially when Scott Gorham and Brain Robertson were the guitarists. The chemistry between the two was undeniable. My only gripe is that they didn’t add more tracks from the original release.
Although TL would later employ Gary Moore on guitar and enjoy further success, this moment in time captures them in their finest form. When it comes to live releases it’s all about the energy and desire of the band to perform on a given night. This was Thin Lizzy’s night.
