Toby Keith in April at a tribute concert to George Strait.
Here’s a surprise:
Toby Keith wants to make you mad.
Keith just released an animated music video for his current single, American Ride, a rocking uptempo portrait of America, and not the most flattering picture.
He says he “loves the American ride,” but the video is highly critical of a plethora of American “virtues,” including watching “Desperate Housewives,” immigration, Wall Street, the Presidency — both Bushes’ and Obama’s — beauty queens, plastic surgery, gas prices. The list goes on.
The video is animated using a process like Flash cartoon animation, similar to the popular JibJab ‘toons.
Here’s the link on CMT:
Keith doesn’t care who he offends — he’s an equal opportunity offender. Of course, anyone who disagrees or criticizes him is a “hater.”
I’m all for music that addresses social problems or protests the state of affairs — I grew up in the late 60s when that was popular. I knew the words to Where Have All the Flowers Gone by the time I was 8.
But this video doesn’t seem to have much of a point. Like I’m not sure if he’s against the ozone buring, or whether he thinks it’s just hype.
I’m actually a little surprised the video made it past the censors.
I’m also sure this will be one of those you-either-love-it-or -you-hate-it videos, not unlike Keith.
But at least you’ll feel alive!

Why should it get censored, it’s the truth. If they can play that RAP CRAP and it doesn’t get censored, this song shouldn’t either. Congratulations to Toby and the writers of the song (I can’t remember their names).
OMG you people got it so wrong, he’s not trying to make a point, he’s being Toby. Love the marketing angle he has, puts a video out and all of you come to the conclusion he’s taking a stand…he doesn’t need the video to do that, have a conversation with him!
Touche’ to Toby, controversial video will again put you at the top.
Love you! Your the best, rock on!
Country music radio — and television — is conservative. Execs know that a lot of children watch and listen, so they’re careful about what the show and play. And that’s a good thing, I think.
Two examples: They ‘censored’ Blake Shelton getting flipped the bird on the video for Some Beach, and Taylor Swift changed the lyrics on Picture to Burn.
According to Keith, “I’m a ‘right-wrong guy’ not a ‘right-left guy’ and this video shows that. We took our shots at everyone.”
So I’m not sure why Debba says he’s not taking a stand, not making a point. Having interviewed Keith three or four times, he doesn’t say anything that doesn’t make a point. Never any chit chat or small talk. The guy’s a walking controversy. And proud of it!
Toby Keith is just Toby Keith. He says what he thinks and I take my hat off to him for that. He is a great singer and person in my book.
This is the reason he made this. He wants controversy. I think the video is hilarious.
