Jonas Brothers fans endure ‘Trying Times’ to see their favorite band
THE SHOW: Jonas Brothers with Jordin Sparks and Honor Society
WHEN: Wednesday night, at BankAtlantic Center
THE SCENE: Crowded. Very crowded, so much so that fans stood still in line outside the arena in a non-moving line for more than 40 minutes waiting to get in. Also, lots of screaming and shouted marriage proposals.
OUR TAKE: Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas appear to tour more than soul singers on the Chittling Circuit in the 1950s and ’60s. They’ve been to South Florida about six times in the past three years or so, and their big show at BankAtlantic, in support of their album “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” is even bigger than the last one. Performed in the round, the show helped ease some parental concerns about shelling out big money for a show you can’t see well. Make no mistake – there were many, many good seats at this show, with the central round stage and two wings that jutted out on either side so that the JoBros and their band could run around and get up closer and more personal with the people.
As for the music – it’s still non-offensive, unsophisticated pop, but that’s OK when it’s being crafted by kids for kids. And for non-offensive pop, songs like “Gotta Find You” and “When You Look Me In The Eye” are pretty good, catchy, solid numbers. In fact, a few of their tunes, including “Love Bug” and “Live To Party” are REALLY good – the latter sizzled live, having been de-cheesed some from the recorded version and benefitting from Nick’s drumming.
That Nick, I’m telling you, is headed somewhere as a solo artist, no matter what happens with the JoBros in the future. He’s the primary songwriter, a sensitive soul (he had a beautiful, vulnerable monologue about how scared he was to be diagnosed with diabetes, and that he’d asked if he was going to die) and has, in my old lady opinion, become the cute one. The others have great stage presence, but Nick’s the real deal.
I missed Honor Society due to story filing duties, but Jordin Sparks has progressed mightily as a performer since winning “American Idol.” She’s looser and less mechanical, and her singing voice is still stellar. She’s got Carrie Underwood-like growth potential. She showed up with the JoBros to sing “Battlefield,” on which Joe mostly sang back-up and looked cute. My favorite other atypical JoBros contribution was “Sweet Caroline” for the parents, they said, although most of the parents are in their late 30s and 40s and may have appreciated “The Reflex” more. Just saying.
All in all — a really fun show that the core audience will eat up.

come on… i was close to them too.. but not that close.. if i had a 10 foot pole.. i could’ve knocked them out.. i wouldn’t have.. but just saying.. i would NEVER EVER hurt them in any way… :)
