The artist: Ben Frost

The album: By The Throat (Bedroom Community)

btt_frostThe spin: Ben Frost’s music tends to get lumped in as ambient, but the ambience Frost creates is anything but soothing.

An Australian electronic artist who makes his home now in Iceland, Frost has created an epic of horrific turns and twists, aptly titled as this music clenches on the jugular and will not release.

From the gothic soundscape of “The Carpathians”, complete with howling wolves, to “Hibakúsja”, in which he staples and scorches a lovely brass theme until it’s ash, Frost infuses each track with menace. Even a two-part tribute to Ghostbusters, “Peter Venkman”, is a ghost story with very little mirth.

The grade: B+
