Lake Worth got a little dose of Brooklyn last night with the Vivian Girls show at Propaganda. In tow was Hooray For Goodbye also from the hipster mecca and the Miami band Pretty Please. Propaganda plays host to indie rock bands from Florida and beyond – it has quickly become the go to place for under-the- -radar and up-and-coming bands. Co-owner, promoter and local music advocate Steve Rullman created this club to provide local bands with a place to play in South Florida – something that is in short supply.

IMG_8511Pretty Please opened the evening with their quirky energy. Lead singer Bianca shouted into the mic and played enthusiastically on her keyboard. The band is all women apart from the male drummer. He was the only guy among the otherwise wholly female list of performers – it was an estrogen laced night of rock. Keyboardist Baviee switched to violin half way through the set and added some angular melodies to the chaotic sound. The band put in a good effort but they still need to polish their set – they were a bit discordant and disjointed.

IMG_8542Brooklyn’s Hooray For Goodbye jumped on stage with an unassuming confidence. They handily cruised through their set. This was a welcome contrast to the first performance – they brought a polished and cohesive sound. Lead singer Genny Slag sang and danced energetically with her mosh-pit moves. Guitarist Marz Makeo strummed edgy chords and plucked intricate melodies, occasionally ripping into a solo that revealed her impressive skills. Hooray was tight and showed that they all are accomplished musicians.

It was nearly midnight when Vivian Girls took the stage. The Girls swung into “Walking Alone at Night”. Their girlish voices floated on lo-fi fuzzed out guitars and beating drums. It was a noisy and clangorous set that got off to a good start.

Unfortunately their momentum was disrupted by Kickball Katy’s brand new bass short circuiting. The amp was throwing pops of static and then finally the bass just went dead. It was a scramble on stage with the sound guy looking at the amp and disconnecting and reconnecting wires. Eventually a member of another band lent Katy his bass and she finished with the set with that. She said she was bummed since she had just bought that bass that day. Despite the technical problems Vivian Girls held their heads high and played through. The crowd was just happy to hear the reverb soaked tunes that hail back to the early riot grrl days.
