When it comes to weather, many say that Floridians — especially South Floridians — wilt when it turns cold and nasty outside.
But clearly, residents are built of much tougher stuff, especially if their favorite bands are involved.
Out on a damp, muddy lawn area, the fans of the band The Used were singing every lyric, even as the temperature dropped thanks to a misty rain that seemed to hang around too long at the Buzz Bake Sale.
“We love you, Bert McCracken!” yelled one fan to the band’s lead singer.
It seemed nothing would keep thousands of music fans from venturing out to the Cruzan Amphitheatre on Saturday — not rain, or cold, or wind, or a certain huge college football game.
“Hope you’re not missing your precious (bleepin’) football game!” McCracken yelled to the crowd.
Young fans were as steady as the rain, greeting each of the 21 bands on three stages with cheers. They were rewarded with one of the more diverse lineups in the Bake Sale’s 14 years.
During the afternoon, fans could jump from the electro-rock of Metric to the sardonic arena rock of Say Anything to the hard-driving sound of Manchester Orchestra.
Or you could hop from the pure me sound of The Used to the reggae-metal stomp of Skindred — as both were on stage at the same time.
You even had a choice on how to stay warm — fist-pump along with McCracken or jump with the wild Welsh beat of Skindred. Either worked pretty well.

Matisyahu, the reggae/hip-hop artist, put on less of a “screaming” show that the rest of Buzz Bake Sale had during the day, and brought beat to the audience. Dancing around the stage, as he did when he played Pompano Amphitheater in the fall and Sunfest in West Palm in May of this year, he kept the energy up and positive.
30 Seconds to Mars completed the Bake Sale quite well. Girls screamed and wooed over lead singer and heartthrob Jared Leto while the guys sang along to the words of every song. Like The Used, they played a lot of their older stuff with only a couple new songs thrown in.
During the night, they sold their new album, This is War, due out this Tuesday, and promised to sign every single copy that was sold. Leto managed to make the crowd go crazy when he jumped off the stage and ran into the upper level of the amphitheatre. Climbing over seats, without any heavy-duty security, he really proved how to get closer to their fans.
