One of the apparent off-field highlights of an Orange Bowl that may have been lacking in serious on-field fireworks was the halftime performance of, of all the musical acts, Kool and the Gang.
The band is far from a forgotten one — their biggest hit, “Celebration”, can be heard at wedding receptions and sporting events worldwide almost daily. And when “Jungle Boogie” was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, that song achieved a whole new level of, well, cool.
But the band hasn’t had a big hit since 1985′s “Cherish”. So it was quite surprising when they appeared as a top Google search during the morning after the game.
Mind you, the search was spelled wrong — “Cool and the gang” was most popular. But still, it occupied a top-10 position for a couple of hours, according to Google Trends.
The band made the biggest impression on international sites, such as Thaindian News, who wrote: “‘Jungle Boogie’, which became a nightclub favorite, sung by the band member Don Boyce, swayed the crowd.”
However, there were more mixed reviews closer to home. Craig DeVrieze, writing The Quad City Times’ game blog, noted: “It’s never time to listen to Kool and the Gang. Show me something else.”
