More on Lady Gaga

Seeing Akon play a show in Wellington among the horsey set seems like an odd combination.

However, these days, the singer has made himself into a major record-label mogul, and he could easily find himself in that club — some of whose members might be in attendance Friday at Akon’s show at the International Equestrian Center, opening the $25,000 Puissance International equestrian event.

Akon’s recent success can be attributed to one singer — Lady Gaga. The dance-music icon was released from her contract at Def Jam Records a few years ago, and Akon, who was just starting his own label, Kon Live, through Interscope, snapped up the then-unknown singer.

Two multi-platinum albums, huge-selling tours and several Grammy Awards later, Lady Gaga’s one of the biggest things in music. And Akon is a rich man.

“She’s pretty much retired me,” Akon told the Associated Press. “She was definitely a blessing. She came at the right moment. I’m glad I believed in her, boy. That goes to show you, if you believe in something strong enough, it will pay off.”

In addition, he’s also released a new fragrance. Called Konvict, the scent is available in twin handcuff bottles. Akon is donating 10 percent of Konvict’s proceeds to his Konfidence Foundation for underprivileged African youth.

Friday’s show kicks off the Puissance event, which will bring together many of the world’s top equestrian competitors, including U.S. Olympic gold medalists.

  1. How awful. says:

The above comment was made in response to several racist comments posted before it…which have now been wisely removed by the site administrator. Given that, mine no longer makes sense – in fact could be misconstrued – and so it too should be removed.

  2. Barb says:

What ever happened to “real” music? I miss real bands and musicians who actually play an instrument. Every radio station in Palm Beach County sounds the same. I’ll continue to buy/make my own CDs. Done with the crap on the radio and the DJs are not entertaining either.
