Monday, Kim Schifino, the female half of the dance-pop duo Matt & Kim, reported on Twitter about a show in Oxford, Miss.: “Big Freedia just killed it on stage! I’m already sweaty & i haven’t hit a drum yet. These next few shows are going to blow my mind.”
And that’s perfectly OK with both Schifino and Matt Johnson, who pride themselves on putting on high-energy shows – something they’re hoping for Thursday when they play Fort Lauderdale’s Culture Room.
“Luckily, we’re the kind of band where our reputation definitely precedes us,” Johnson said in a telephone interview from New Orleans. “That was a pretty crazy show.”
The group’s reputation was built on a number of things, among which are the video for the song “Lessons Learned” where both members got naked on the sidewalks of New York, and a willingness to make their live shows as fun and crazy as possible.
That kind of atmosphere also releases the duo from the recently stressful yet exciting process of putting together their newest album, Sidewalks, which comes out on Nov. 2.
“Being that it took about nine months to record, I guess it is about how long it takes to have a child,” Johnson said. “We’re certainly excited to have it out and about in the world.
“It is seriously stressful, though. We’d set aside a month to work out songs we’d been working on, and in January we wanted to try to make sure they were tightened up before we recorded in February and March. And like most things, it took longer than expected, and we had a bunch of shows and tours coming up. Any day we weren’t touring, we were back in New York working on the album, and anytime we weren’t working on the album, we were out on the road.”
Johnson said the goal with Sidewalks was to continue the sound they’d established with 2009’s Grand, which included the single “Daylight”. That song not only proved to be popular on indie-music stations, it also enticed advertisers and video-game designers due to its bouncy piano melody.
This time around, at least with Sidewalks’ first single, “Cameras”, there’s a more overt hip-hop feel to their sound, though Johnson is quick to point out that he and Schifino have always been big fans of hip-hop.
“Kim and I are huge hip-hop fans, though we’re also fans of a lot of different kinds of music,” Johnson said. “We love music we find fun. We’ve had a hip-hop sound as long as we’ve done music – even songs like “Daylight” or “Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare” have it, although it’s more low-fi. It’s all there.”
The difference this time around was working with a producer, something Matt & Kim haven’t done in the past. The presence of Ben Allen – known as a talented engineer with such acts as Gnarls Barkley and Christina Aguilera – allowed the duo to concentrate more on writing and performing and less on the more esoteric details of recording.
Now that Sidewalks is in the can, awaiting release, Matt & Kim can concentrate more on the aspect of making sure they perform with extremely high energy, something they see in acts like Girl Talk, who has the same reputation.
After his interview, clearly Johnson and Schifino continued their run of mind-blowing shows. This was the Twitter dispatch after their show Wednesday: “New Orleans: record for most thongs thrown on stage at a M&K show!”
Fort Lauderdale’s got a lot to live up to.
