Lake Worth-based singer/songwriter Jason Hanley’s group Sound Proof (soundproofproductions.us) shifts away from its usual worldly pop sound to play standards on a new, self-released CD called Jazz Images. And for the most part, the amoebic guitarist’s formula works.

With no drummer, Hanley and acoustic bassist Steve Jernigan essentially form the rhythm section for flutist Jim Kovalcik and guest vocalist Marijah Speziale. Kovalcik’s lyrical playing, and Hanley’s nimble fretwork, highlight instrumental versions of Georgia and Sugar, respectively.

Speziale makes Somewhere Over the Rainbow and My Funny Valentine her own, as the reggae singer’s unique phrasing actually breathes new life into the jazz chestnuts.

See Sound Proof from 8:30-10:30 p.m. today at the Fusion Lounge, 758 Northlake Blvd., Lake Park (561-502-2307), and from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Kavasutra, 508 Lake Ave., Lake Worth (561-932-7220 ).

Stuart-based singer/songwriters Doreen Poreba and Mike Jordan formed the duo Connected Souls (connected-souls.com) after the sudden death of one of Poreba’s friends. The loss inspired her to perform in public for the first time, and to record the self-released CD Time to Play with fellow singing guitarist Jordan, lead guitarist Don Rowell, and multi-instrumentalist and programmer Albert Miller.

Jordan’s opening composition Treat Each Other Like God Would, and Poreba’s subsequent God Paints a Picture, state the contemporary Christian theme of the disc. The duo’s vocal harmonies are a highlight, as is Rowell’s intermittent slide guitar.

Miller’s synthesizer work and programmed drums occasionally push the schmaltz meter near the red, but if you like spiritual music with pop and easy listening touches a la The Carpenters, Captain & Tennille and Anne Murray, this duo could provide your area connection.

See Connected Souls from 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Unity of Stuart’s Spiritual Coffee House, 211 S.E. Central Parkway, Stuart (772-286-3878 ).

NOW HEAR THIS

Renegade poet Chris Chandler (chrischandler.org ) has collaborated with artists from Magda Hiller to Ani DiFranco, and was called "the best performance poet I have ever seen" by a former DiFranco collaborator, the late Utah Phillips. Chandler is teamed with inventive Seattle singer/songwriter and guitarist Paul Benoit for their "Modern Multimedia Minstrel Show" at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Respectable Street, 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach (561-832-999).

A funny thing happened on the way to Lake Worth becoming Music Town, as its city commissioners unanimously approved a downtown noise ordinance last month. Yet it doesn’t go as far as its proponents wanted it to, though Chrissy Benoit, owner of the open-air Havana Hideout and a member of the ordinance task force, thinks it’s a decent compromise. But churches are exempt from the new decibel limits (85 until 11 p.m. on weekdays; midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 65 otherwise), measured from 150 feet away. One wonders: Did the ordinance’s proponents also tried to get swing-era Big Band jazz included under the sacred music umbrella?

One Response to “Lake Worth group breathes new life into jazz standards”

  1. Thank you for the nice review of our debut CD, Bill. I remember you from my SunFest days and knowing that you’re a music critic, I realize not all of your reviews are going to be positive. So getting a complimentary review from you means a lot to me. It’s interesting – we did not set out to record a spiritual CD, but from the feedback we have gotten – that has primarily been the perception. Many people also have described our music as “comforting” and “feel good.” As long as people are enjoying the tunes, we don’t care what they call it! If you can send me your e-mail address, I’d love to add you to my media mailing list.
