Paradise’s troubadour and part-time Palm Beacher Jimmy Buffett says he was happy to revise the words to his hit “Fins” so it could serve as the Miami Dolphins’ unofficial theme song.
“I had no problem rewriting it for them,” Buffett told Rolling Stone. “Because if you ever heard the original Dolphins fight song, it was just awful.”
No telling if that will become fighting words among aficianados of Dolphin fight songs. Buffett will be making a big splash with the team this fall, since the Dolphins stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium, a business deal to tie in to Buffett’s brand of beer.
Here’s what else he told Rolling Stone:
He’s performing new songs on his current concert tour: There are three of them: A Lot To Drink About, Surfing In A Hurricane and Summerzcool. He says he challenged himself to write new songs that could stand up beside his old hits.
He’s still keeping an eye on the Madoff scandal: A Lot To Drink About boasts the lines: “Madoff made off with all the money.” Buffett says he may keep rewriting the song to add current events. “Since we finished the original version, we’ve already had swine flu. I’m not lacking for material.”
He’s got a new studio album coming out in the fall: It will include those songs and more, including tunes he was inspired to write after attending a wild music festival in the desert in Mali.
But what about that fight song? Is Jimmy’s “Fins” better than the old ‘Fins song? Let us know.

Biggest.douche.ever
The old fight song is awful, but we’ve had it forever and it gets some slack for being ancient.
Buffet’s song is at least as bad and twice as embarrassing, and he (or Land Shark’s ad agency, more likely) wrote it last month.
Douchetastic!
He has always been a dick anyway.
The song is fitting ………Fins blow! Go BUFFALO !
The song is fitting, The FINS BLOW ! GOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUFFALO !!!!
bILL- I DIDN’T KNOW YOU GUYS COULD READ UP THERE IN bUFFALO? GLAD YOU ARE GETTING OUT OF THE BOWLING ALLEYS AND ACTUALLY LEARNING SOMETHING!
Why are New Yorkers posting on a Palm Beach publication’s web site and bashing Buffett and the Miami Dolphins? Seriously? Buffalo? Have you ever been to Buffalo? Sorry, I’ll take my beaches, palm trees, and Buffett CDS any day over that snow plow nightmare of a place. And we’re really sorry Doug Flutie didn’t work out for you guys . . .
That is one guy who absolutely has ZERO RIGHT to call any song awful! After the crap he’s written?!?!?! ….and don’t give me the response about how much money he’s made or his popularity – those things in no way constitute or validate whether or not music is good. He writes elementary chord progressions with less than simple melodies and lyrics that are one step below commercial jingles. HACK!
Now you guys know that Jimmy is a god and can do no wrong.
Parrot Head from way back.
Jimmy Buffett is awful!. The only reason that he isn’t a redneck is that he doesn’t play country music. He’s about as popular as his beer & he is such a virtuoso on the guitar. NOT!. His few fans are fruitcakes with their Trick or Treat outfits. A No talent…
he hides behind the vail of the “relaxed culture”… he is a tyrant, and not as funloving as his songs would suggest.
LOL << thats what happened the first time I heard the current Fins song during a trip to Dolphin Stadium. I about fell out of my seat and down the aisle because it was soo bad(and by the way it’s a ripoff of the old Oilers song). But seeing as the score was 42-7 at the half and the “fins” definitely weren’t winning this one, at least I only had to endure the eardrum piecing song a couple times. It sound like it is a bad commercial from the sixties.
As far a Buffett, man, some people are so close minded. Just because he doesn’t play “your” kind of music doesn’t mean he is a no talent hack. As a matter of fact, I believe that man still sells out tons of shows every year(something the Dolphins haven’t done since before i was born probably)
The fins made us proud last year and getting Jason Taylor back along with Jimmy Buffet’s song…we can’t lose…Oh by the way, you moron Buffalo fans…have fun with T. O… birds of a feather belong together…He’s a loser and so are the Bills…and if anyone would know about blowing…Bills fans would at the top of the list. Pretty soon the team will move to Canada to get away from the losers who sit in the stands with their dumb faces painted. Get over yourselves…you suck.
Buffet’s music is good but that’s it. Anyone who knows anything about this guy will tell you the same thing: He’s a rude, money grubbing a$$hole.
One more thing, the song is a FIGHT SONG, not some mindless crap that will not be in style next year.
I love Buffett but that has nothing to do with my opinion that the song is antiquated. Gimme something with a tropical feel….heck throw some hip hip in there too! anything to get the crowd going instead of moaning.
And Jeff, unfortunately the Dolphins had this bad fight song first…..I remember this from the early 1970s, even before their 1972 undefeated season, when I was growing up in Lauderdale…long before Earl Campbell and the Oilers blasted it nationwide on MNF when they beat Miami in that great game in the Astrodome.
Every time j. buffutt backs a political person they lose so will this curse the dolphins? He sings songs about greedy white men ruining islands and then moves to palm beach? he should have moved to cedar key.
Buffit should should stick to singing to drunks, and take his crappy beer and B.S. somewhere else….
Jimmy Buffet is absolutely correct, the dolphin ‘fight song’ is maybe one the worst ever written. Having heard it endlessly since the mid 70’s I revise that and say it is the worst team song in American sports history. And Bob Dylan saying Buffet was one of his 10 favorite song writers, along with Leonard Cohen? well ‘Pirate looks at 40’ is a pop masterpiece, so a new Dolphin fight from JB could hardly be worse then the joke song Dolphin fans have lived with for 40 years..
Here’s the rub…..
…… the poster above who mentioned that Jimmy Buffet is a rude, obnoxious dick, regrettably is absolutely correct…I worked for MCA records in the 90’s, we had some of the worst Buffet music he ever made, can you say Fruitcakes, but we worked it hard and actually ran that piece of shit up the chart, because that was our job and we loved our business, the record business…
Yet Jimmy treated field staff, local people who worked in sales and promotion like shit….
In 30 years at 3 major labels he was the worst. From Paul McCartney to Bobby Brown, from Bon Jovi and Def Leppard to Bob Seger, from Petty to the Little River Band…these stars had the class, the brains, or both, to treat the people who worked their records with respect, even if they had issues with the label on a national level..
For Bob Seger, a wonderful person, who would blow away 18,000 people for 2-3 hours to take 10-30 minutes back stage after a show and smile, take a couple of pictures a literally let strangers ‘love him’ and say ‘thanks’ is the way it was for all the fantastic acts I mentioned above and many many more….and there were plenty of nights when these guys really wanted to bail and go straight to the hotel….but that’s what these guys did every night…it was routine, it was a pain in the ass, it was a job, but it made people happy and gave them memories they’ve shared for the rest of their lives as they recalled the night they went backstage at the Bon Jovi concert at the Sundome, or the night ‘we went backstage’ and ‘we have our pictures taken with Paul Mc Cartney, or Tom Petty or..well you get….these few folks told everyone how incredible the show was and ‘Seger is such a great guy’..’he signed this album and check out this picture’ he was really nice……
Oh, there were a few other assholes, but Buffet was multi platinum…
We’ll never forget you Jimmy..

Buffet I like some of your songs, but don’t mess with tradition! When people mess with tradition, it ussually comes back to bite them. Go have a cup of coffee with your Krispy Cremes and then sip on the crappy goat pee beer and leave the D-Fins song alone you money grubbin jerk! Also, think about donating all that $$ you are making to a good cause and make a name for yourself that way!
You cant take it with you were ever you end up!
I love tradition, but I have to agree with Jimmy B. The Dolphins song is AWEFUL. Sounds like a 70’s sitcom theme song..BJ and Bear comes to mind…GET RID OF IT!
Having grown up in the midwest and worshipped Jimmy in the early years as the ultimate beach bum, a laid back dude happiest with a guitar and a beach….I was kinda bummed once I lived here awhile to hear the stories; he’s more Trump than tequila. Palm Beach in the winter, the Hamptons in the summer……not exactly the boats, bars and beers crowd he sings about. Hes more Prada-head than Parrothead.
Too bad.
Jimmy is right. The Old Dolphin song sucks. It is the exact
track from the Houston Oilers , and it sucked then.
It’s long over due to ditch that piece of crap & replace
it with anything. If you folks don’t like ” Fins “,
come up with something better.
Good Luck this coming season
Again, The Fins old Fight Song was first played in Miami. Houston copied the Fins song. It is not the best, but it is what we have. Jimmy’s song is not replacing the old fight song. People should just go and support the team and have a good time instead of bitching all the time.
Being a season ticket holder I always felt the fight song sucked. Looking forward to this season and the new song. Go FINS!!!!
jimmy is a class act period. i worked with him for 15 years. he is honest, pays his bills, and is an overall friendly person. not to mention an absolute genius, i mean he is a world class entertainer, and a world class businessman. period, unless you know him, dont judge him,
good luck jimmy, we all know you will revive the whole dolphin franchise.
He had no problem rewriting it because he’s going to make a killing selling his beer, Land Shark Lager. Writing a new song was part of the endorsement deal and rights to naming the stadium. He certainly didn’t do it out of the goodness of his heart. Gee, I wonder what the main beer in the stadium is going to be? Make no mistake, he’s pretty astute as a businessman, but as a musician (and as a human being), he’s a total HACK.
I have known Jimmy for more than 35 years..He is a kind considerate person, friend, father, husband and all around great guy.Good for him that he is a huge success. He has never forgotten where he came from nor his friends. He does many things for others with ever asking to be acknowledged. The man has a good heart.Florida is lucky to have him.
Hey Brad…most of west palm is new yorkers. Where you been?
Old song sucks, new song sucks an now Joe Robbie is sponsored by a beer that tastes worse than bud light.
Selling out…thats what So Flo is all about.
I was priveliged to go to two Dolphin games back in the ‘72 perfect season… Buffet should either record a new version of the song [he'd probably do a good job], or just leave a great So. Florida tradition alone…
THEY’RE IN THE AIR-THEY’RE ON THE GROUND-THEY’RE ALWAYS IN CONTROL…AND WHEN YOU SAY MIAMI-YOU’RE TALKING SUPERBOWL…
Can’t be beat after a home game TD!!
The new song is nothing but rehashed drivel geared to aging mullet heads, gray pony tailed baby boomers & their airhead consorts by a guy who single handedly destroyed the Keys.
Newsflash Buffett…”fins to the left and fins to the right” blows worse.
Just because Buffet is a nice guy doesn’t mean we should happily accept our beloved franchise hitching the entire Dolphin identity to Buffet’s hokie, outdated, cheesy, cliche of a marketing demograph that represents not only a small portion of our fan base, but the most embarrassing.
This whole relationship has been garbage from the jump, regardless of how they position it to the public.
His music is hokie and his “parrothead” fans are a joke.
It makes one cringe.
2009 kids don’t relate to this garbage, and the majority of adult Dolphin fans (yes, the parents of young Dol-Fans) don’t listen to Buffet and could care less about this doomed campaign.
Another horrible mistake by this franchise.
Pat–if JB moved to Ceder Key you’d be bitchin’ about how he ruined what used to be a laid back close knit community by bringing all the snowbirds in. I think he’s doing places like Ceder Key a favor by living in places where he’s just another famous face and not THE famous face in the whole town. Famous people value what little privacy they can get where they can get it In this fame worshipping country that’s where their money can keep them away from prying eyes.
I am a long time season ticket holder and could care less about Jimmy Buffets lousy song. The old one was hokey, ok but it is supposed to be. The fans aren’t looking for music for their car stereo but a song to get people fired up that is easy to remember. His music is lame at best anyway and he IS a complete jerk and a snob. I will not be buying any shark p*ss beer at the game because it tastes rank (yuck). If there is money to be made he will be involved, but don’t ever believe that he cares about any of Florida.
But anyway, Go Dolphins!!
Buffalo and T.O. should be fun to watch implode this year.
Charlie abd No Buffett—-Parrothead says…shuv it up your dumb ASS
Davis—go screw yourself
John…All I can say is u r an ignorant sob and fo F yourself. U ignorant MF
Jimmy is right. The song has always been aweful and was ripped off from the Houston Oilers to begin with. This is a new era and a new fight song only seems fitting.
Wow….Leave it to Northeasterners to chime in on what is best for South Florida culture and sports, while eating Coney Island hotdogs, Philly Cheesesteaks, New York Pizza and never missing a Yankees or Jets game at our stadium. Go back…..resign from the condo association board, take your 3 Tenors CD’s and fly your obnoxiuos rearends back to the rich climate of the likes of Buffalo. This isn’t your home and these aren’t your teams so why be here. Your snow shovel awaits.
Sincerely yours,
A Florida Native
Patrick, I hope your “Native Floridian” sensibilities don’t mind this NY Jet fan “parroting” what many reasonable and musically astute Miami Dolphin fans (above) seem to “get”…:
… that Jimmy Buffet is, musically-speaking, a walking, squawking eff’in FRAUD. The clown’s 24-carat, phony baloney “mellow dude” act (at best) plays with tin-earred burnouts in Key West or Tommy-shirted ‘weekend beachcomber’ wannabe balding CPA’s originally from Long Island (smirk). But musically, he is–always was–irrevevant. Other than that, he sucks the big one; LMAO
I think everyone is missing the bigger picture here. Buffalo sucks. The Jets suck. The Patriots are cheaters. ‘Nuff said.
Oh yeah, the Gators suck too…..
Jimmy Buffett is an all time favorite here in florida. read up on the history of jimmy. everyone wants to have the money he has and don nothing but relax on the beach and drink a cold one. im not a big fan of his beer but living the salt life is the greatest
Every time our Miami Dolphins score, they play Jimmy Buffet’s song “Fins”. THIS SONG IS HORRIBLE AND MUST GO! How could they take away our FIGHT SONG after all these years – I guess that is what money does to an organization.

I’m going to agree with Mitch, the previous poster. When the ‘phins score and they play Buffet’s boring and clownish song, “Fins Up” it is a travesty. Opposing teams probably enjoy how fast the wind blows out of the crowd’s sails and how quiet the stadium gets after a HOME TEAM score.
And then, when you compare how wild the stadium gets when they play the old fight song to start the 4th quarter, its a no brainer as to how idiotic this new song is. People need to rise up and “vote down” this comical, laissez-faire attempt at a fight song before Buffet and his various endorsement deals ruin all credibility for the players and fans of the Miami Dolphins.
Not accusing, but someone sang song calling FBI Terrorist. Anybody know whether it was Buffet, or someone else? Shameful.
