Wyclef Jean performing at the General Assembly...

Wyclef Jean, the rapper/singer who was born in Haiti, has asked the international community to assist his homeland in the wake of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake which has devastated the Caribbean nation.

Unfortunately, his efforts, which include appeals on the Web and Twitter, may have worked too well. The Web site for his charity, Yele, has been down for hours, according to the Associated Press.

The AP reported that Jean’s publicist, Leslie Chasky, says he arrived Wednesday in Haiti and is focusing on his family, his Haitian charity and responding to the disaster.

According to Billboard, Jean says with thousands of lives lost and massive devastation, there’s no time to lose for immediate relief:

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced,” said Wyclef Jean last night. “The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.”

Those interested in helping the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund with the relief effort can text “yele” to 501501, which will donate $5 to the fund. That money will be charged to the cell phone bill. Alternatively, visit www.yele.org (once the site’s back online) and click on “Donate Now”.

  1. JB says:

I’m trying to think of a single instance the Haitian Nation has come to anybody else’s rescue or offered relief to any nation.
The United States does enough supporting the local Haitian community, which is a complete drain on our economy. As a whole there is very little Haitians contribute to society. The United States does not need to be the worlds saviors, let the Haitian Nation provide its own support and relief. There are certainly enough Haitians to lend a hand. Any Haitians currently living in the US should consider this wonderful opportunity to show commitment to their heritage and travel to Haiti to lend a hand instead of just causing a ruckus by shouting out for help. Go be a part of the relief effort – prove that you want to be a part of the cause.

  2. Chris says:

I compleletly disagree with you JB. This is not about the United States being the worlds savior. Haiti is a poor country and they need everyone’s help not just from the United States. Spending your $5 Mc Donnalds money can help alot.

  3. OMG says:

I can not believe the last post from JB. This is no about what or who has done what this is about helping when tragedy! If anyone wants to help out of the kindness of their hearts and for the love a humanity that is what people are calling for. Can’t we all just love each other and come together not only in times of need but for peace as well on a daily basis!

  4. Praise says:

JB; May the Lord have mercy on your soul for you are a true disgrace to humanity. Maybe people have concerns about other nations but right now is not the time….God help us all through your lovely son Jesus Christ. Not as our will, but your will be done..amen

  5. Allen Raymond Wayne says:

I’m extremely disapointed to hear those types of remarks from JB&Chris, you two are not doing anything wrong by revealing the selfish and inconsiderate qualities that you both posses. It’s because of people with the mindset like you that we have the bernie madoffs of the world. Money is not associated with class and character. Haiti is a poor country, but its full of the most ethically sound, kind and caring people in the world. Imagine if haiti and usa switced places, haitians would be more than willing to offer a helping hand to america. You guys should not be so hypocritical borrowing money from china, britian, france and begging for help becuase of the current ression. Don’t forget the branch that you came from.

  6. Praise says:

    To all let us pray;
Our Father which art in heaven,Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts,as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

  7. Beautiful Stylesof Bryce says:

this is time to know god. get god for our family and friends and peole that you by and better yet get god for Haiti. they need our praise right now at this time so people pray that the ones that you love in haiti and the ones thath you do not know. And for the man the is right by hati side Mr. Wyclef Jean

  8. Alfa95 says:

JB, although I may have agreed with your opinion regarding other countries, we have to remember that Haiti IS the poorest country in the Caribbean. If one thing I know about Haitians, having worked around them for a few years is that they really look out for their people. How bad would it look for the U.S. if we wouldn’t send any help and communist turning Venezuela is sending a team to help over there? If one thing I know having come from another country, is that the U.S.A. is the best country in the world……at least to me, IT IS.

  9. K says:

In this free and modern society it seems JB has totally allowed Satin to use his mind and thought pattern to the fullest. The 7.0 earthquake in Haiti was a natural diaster and could have happened anywhere. Especially with all the recent weather patterns.

I pray God’s blessings and swif relief for Haiti and it’s people through their time of devastation.

  10. BeachLiz says:

Our country has a duty to help. The U.S. and all countries that use extreme resources from our earth should give back to Haiti and small countries like this one that need help when there is a disaster.
Our country is blessed because we do so!

So JB go hide out in your woods and continue your hunting with your buddies.

  11. devil's advocate says:

Uhhhhhh, K. Satin is a type of material, Satan is another word for devil. And speaking of GOD and the Devil, how do we know whether maybe this was part of GOD’s perfect plan or a punishment to Haiti. I don’t agree that Haiti would do the same for us with the roles reversed. I have had to work with alot of haitian people, a couple were truly good hearted people. The majority unfortunately were not. I think we should help them to a degree, but it is not our responsibility to bail us them of this mess. Did they offer to help us during Katrina. And why are they the poorest caribbean nation, BECAUSE THEY SQUANDERED ALL OF THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES. Not the peoples fault, but corrupt government. Like JB I would like to see them rally and help themselves, not just receive international aid.

  12. wizearrss says:

Let’s get to the root of the problem. “There aint no trees in Haiti”. Soil erosion= unstable foundations. solution- give every Haitian a tree seed to plant and WoW….8,300,00 trees for future generations.

  13. Chris says:

I hope they get all of the help that they need but fear it would never be enough.
I wish that we could just take those two million people and divide them up among the G8. Each country receiving 250,000 people. Give them citizenship, healthcare and jobs.
Why not? I mean really, with the amount of money and effort it will take to try to fix this Country why bother?
Lets just get them out of there already. I think that would be the best solution.
Why bother to try to fix a Country and land that is doomed, lets help the people though.
I have a friend with a family there, I pray he made it out alright and his four kids.

  14. Jayburd says:

I am just shocked at the level of stupidity exhibited in this comment thread. People, it is $5! Help Haiti now. Time is of the essence. If the tables were turned, how loud would your voice be in the chorus for pleas for assistance? How angry would you be if you could look in someone’s eyes and beg for your life and they turned away to instead spend the $5 on another cup of $tarbucks. Shame on those of you who are selfish like JB.

  15. steve says:

I SAY WE BRING ALL THE HOMELESS OVER LIKE DURING KUTRINA HURRICANE. SO WHAT IF ALOT OF THEM HAVE HIV. WE SHOULD ATLEAST SPEND BILLION’S ON REBUILDING SINCE WE JUST PAN HANDLED MONEY FROM CHINA. WE CAN JUST HOPE THAT WHEN WE ARE IN SOUP LINES OTHER COUNTRIES THAT HATE US WILL HELP. ALSO THAT ALL YOU KIND PEOPLE WILL STAY KIND WHEN YOU ARE HOMELESS.

  16. Janae says:

It brings tears to my eyes when I read some of the comments that were posted on the thread. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, how do you expect them to come to anyone’s rescue when they can barely survive themselves. The United States does not have to be anyone’s savior, but if you see a man down why is it wrong to help; especially if you have the means to do so. That goes not only for the US but other fortunate nations.

  17. maxwell says:

Well said Janae! I know most Americans do not understand how we got rich and how us getting wealthy led to poverty in the West Indies. The short story is we raped them not only for thier natural resources but also for their most skilled people. Thats right JB thats where R&D was done in order to build our Plantations here state side . Then guess who tought what was learned to our slaves here in south.By the way Lawyer from Hell They got hit by Katrina the day before we did so I think thier plate was alil full at the time. And we have jerks right here in the US that does not mean we all are. My prayers and MEANS are with you HAITI

  18. tica says:

WHO EVER JB IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS JUST KNOW THAT WAS A RUDE AND DISREPECTFUL THING TO SAY ABOUT HAITI AND HAITIANS…DO YOU KNO HOW MUCH HAITIANS HAVE DONE IN AMERICA? DO YOU KNOW WHAT WE GO THROUGH?NO YOU DONT SO I ADVISE YOU TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT….HAITIANS ARE PEOPLE TOO! MAY GOD HAVE MEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRCCCCCCCCCCCCYYYYYYYYYYYY ON YOU….
