Antoine Dodson, the main focus of the original viral clip.
I guess this is the next step in music’s… evolution?
The Gregory Brothers — the guys who came up with the idea of “Auto-Tune The News” — have a bona fide minor chart hit on their hands. Their remix of the “Bed Intruder” news video is currently No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100, between two country songs — Craig Morgan’s “This Ain’t Nothin’” and Brad Paisley’s “Water”.
Actually, according to Billboard, the song is referred to as “Bed Intruder Song” by Antoine Dodson & The Gregory Brothers featuring Kelly Dodson.
Who are Antoine Dodson and Kelly Dodson?
These two are siblings interviewed for a TV news story in Huntsville, Ala. — a very serious story about a suspected serial rapist in the project where the Dodsons make their home. The thing about the story was both of them, especially Antoine, had some very quotable things to say during the broadcast. Because of this, the video hit YouTube and went viral.
Enter The Gregory Brothers. They took the video, added some auto-tune to it and actually turned this into a catchy song (?). And now, they’re on the Billboard charts.
The good news here, according to Mashable, is that Antoine is receiving 50 percent of sales of the single, which is available on iTunes.
Now, we could debate the merits of the original clip, and the remix — but that’s been handled a few places, including M-musings, which explained why this is a phenomenon in a pretty good, concise way.
But is this really music? Is it really worth a spot on Billboard‘s Hot 100? Take our poll and tell us.
