Everybody focuses on the big Grammy categories, like Song of the Year and Best New Artist. But the real fun is usually found in some of the less general fields, where all sorts of people you haven’t thought of in ages and people you’ve been trying to forget all hang out and hope somebody gives them an award. They don’t even care that most of them will be honored in that Not Ready For Primetime Awards Ceremony they do off-camera. It’s all about the love.

1) “Best Long Form Music Video” — “Trapped In The Closet Chapters 13-22,” R. Kelly: I’m on record as wanting to lock the closet permanently, but R. Kelly’s musical clown car of crazy keeps exploding all over the TV, now it’s been nominated in the category. I’m afraid that if he wins, that’ll just be encouraging him.

2) “Best Long Form Music Video” — “Gone Daddy Gone,” Gnarls Barkley: The dastardly duo’s ode to the Violent Femmes follows a bug’s ill-fated crush on a human. It’s great, but was it really necessary to include that disturbing shot of roach-on-girl action? It burns….it burns….

3) “Best Classical Music Crossover” — “Wolfgang’s Big Night Out,” Brian Setzer: The former Stray Cat’s presence here proves that nothing’s too retro for this rocker.
4) “”Best Historical Album” — Actionable Offenses: Indecent Phonograph Recordings From The 1890s,” David Giovannoni et al: I have never heard of this, but the name makes the bratty 12-year-old in me want to go download it now.
5) “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media” — “You Know My Name,” Chris Cornell: This tastily dramatic song from the “Casino Royale” soundtrack is my pick to win because, like a good Bond song, it captures the swankiness and danger of the series. And because I’m really sick of the “Dreamgirls” soundtrack.
6) “Best Compilation Soundtrack Album” — “Love,” The Beatles and “Across The Universe,” Various Artists: The Fab Four go head to head with themselves! The songs in “Across The Universe” are sung by the cast, rather than John, Paul, George and Ringo, and the “Love” tracks are mash-ups. I love them both, but I really love “Love.”
7) “Best Comedy Album” — “The Distant Future,” Flight of the Conchords: It takes a cleverly twisted mind to truly appreciate the silly demented nature of the New Zealand comedy duo’s stuff. I, of course, love it.
8) “Best Hawaiian Music Album” — “Hawaiiana,” Tia Carrere: Yes, that Tia Carrere. And yes, I’m as stunned as you are.
9) “Best Spoken Word Album” : This is the most presidential of all categories. You’ve got two former Commanders in Chief (Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton); a hopeful, (Barack Obama), a guy who played a presidential nominee on “The West Wing” (Alan Alda) and a poet who spoke at Bill Clinton’s inauguration (Maya Angelou.) Weird.

10) “Best Polka Album” — “Come Share The Wine,” Jimmy Sturr: The polkameister once again carries the banner for Palm Beach County. And thanks for the invitation for the drink..we’d love to!
