SunFest video cavalcade: Wednesday/Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday
SunFest 2010 released its lineup of musical acts Monday, and it’s one of the more eclectic mixes of rock, soul, jazz, reggae and country that the waterfront festival has seen in recent years.

Alt-rockers Weezer (“Buddy Holly”, “Beverly Hills”) open the festival on April 28 and rootsy singer-songwriter Ben Harper and ‘80s party band The B-52s close out the festivities along the Flagler Drive waterfront on May 2.

Fuzz-faced rockers ZZ Top will perform on April 29, along with one of the bigger surprises in the lineup: a rare appearance by the critically acclaimed psychedelic indie band The Flaming Lips.

“A band like Flaming Lips wouldn’t have played SunFest five years ago,” said SunFest executive director Paul Jamieson. “We’re moving up in the hipness factor.”

On Friday night, April 30, the proceedings will be soulful and jazzy, with R & B legend Patti LaBelle and Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly.

The weekend schedule for May 1-2 is highlighted by Harper, the B-52s, pub rockers Flogging Molly and country fiddle legend Charlie Daniels.

Other weekend acts: Shinedown, Rise Against, Damian Marley, Nas, Five For Fighting, Sister Hazel, Better than Ezra, Marcus Miller and Classic Albums Live.

Three or four more national acts are expected to be announced. Jamieson said SunFest is also seeking online suggestions at sunfest.com for “cutting-edge” bands to play on the opening New Music Night.

Downtown’s waterfront park will add a new dimension to this year’s festival, Jamieson said, with the green space used as a “great lawn” to watch acts on Flagler Drive’s northern stage.

Tickets are now on sale at sunfest.com, the SunFest store at 525 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach, and phone orders can be taken at 1-800-SUNFEST.

  1. Kongzilla says:

    Great lineup. Love Weezer.

Where are The Hurricanes on this list?

  2. american patriot says:

All the Artists are HAS BEENS and Obviously the City got them because they were cheap because the are HAS BEENS.

Another Sun Fest packed with Has Beens.

Again we will not be paying to see the HAS BEENS.

No one Current will be performing

    • Ocean Lover says:

American Patriot perhaps you should change your name to American Cynic. Turn on your radio, you will hear Shinedown every few hours, hardly a HAS BEEN. Classic rock doesn’t mean HAS BEEN. I have another idea for you: STAY HOME.

    • B by the Sea says:

SunFest isn’t put on by the city, it’s a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with some help from the Florida tourist department. It’s expensive to get the big headliners, but overall I think they did a pretty good job this year diversifying the acts and trying to please the masses. I’m excited about Weezer (not a has been) and Flaming Lips. Both are very current.

    • John F. says:

Save your money and stay home then, YOU WON’T BE MISSED.

    • Mary says:

wow! good thing for us who enjoy good music and fun times with old rock and roll that you won’t be there! Keep your cheesy friends away too!

  3. who cares says:

If you dont like the bands, then dont go american patriot. Who cares what you think anyway.

  4. Kongzilla Too says:

These are some of the best musicians/entertainers in the world.

If they could get Kid Rock.

    …he would rock the house.

  5. Hurricanes fan says:

Much better line-up than usual, but I agree, The Hurricanes are a great local band and they should be included. If you have any doubts, check out their cool Facebook page.

  6. sane citizen says:

Consider getting another great local band, B-Liminal

  7. Local Talent says:

    B-Liminal are great.

  8. G says:

Jazz! What Jazz? Sunfest used to be one of the top rated jazz fests in the nation….now look at it. Big mistake. So much for culture in PB….let’s cater to the uneducated masses now led and influenced by gangs and thug wannabes…

  9. lisa says:

Hey American Pat-riot Those bands are still great. ZZ Top, B’52′s Flaming Lips!!!!! Their music is timeless. Do you know how many millions it would cost to get Lady GaGa or any other current artist. Stop your complaining and just stay home.

  10. lisa says:

Hey G, Jazz sucks!!! it’s just noise, really bad unorganized noise. Makes me want to stab my ear drums.

  11. Ben says:

Has beens? This is the best Sunfest lineup ever. EVER. Been going for many years, and this Sunfest lineup is unexpectedly awesome.

  12. Ben says:

Oh, and uneducated thugs? I’m a white, tax paying, gun toting American citizen with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

    Signed-

    Heywood Jablow Me

  13. hedlykarok says:

The super bowl halftime….now that was the definition of has-beens.

  14. Thewebguy says:

I think the band Don’t Stop Believin’ They are an awesome journey Tribute band

    http://www.myspace.com/dsbshow

  15. James says:

It’s great to see Sunfest bringing in another Irish band(Flogging Molly) and another punk band in Rise Against. Even though Rise against is a bit more mainstream these days it’ll still be a great show. Hell i’m even looking forward to seeing Nas.

  16. James says:

seriously… The Hurricanes? There is a no need for a tweener cover band at Sunfest.

  17. crowsfeet says:

Finally , A great line up for SunFest! Good job !

  18. DSOA-G-Star-Etc. says:

With G-Star, Dreyfus School and local developing performers, in Palm Beach County doesn’t Sunfest have a Kids Stage for lack of a better term….someplace for non-headliners to perform for a different audience?

It would be a great place for developing musicians and performers we are spending resources educating…to get some real experience…..

G-Star puts on an annual event..I cannot recall the name… at the Cohen Pavillion at the Kravis Center…the young kids, dancers and musicians were a shock to me….I expected really bad stuff but they were very dedicated and original.

  19. Great says:

    Yes. Excellent line up.

Really looking forward to this year and enjoying SunFest on the new Waterfront…which is really nice…

It will be interesting to see how it handles a big crowd.

  20. bkny says:

Hey G NAS is not a has been…and were would we be if we didnt have this so called has been music? and i dont see any catering to uneducated masses….i see catering to the masses…which is what they admin of sunfest should do…include as many different musical styles as possible so there is something for everone…
whats funny here is all this complaining…and these same people will STILL go buy a ticket and hang out for sunfest….rofl!!!

  21. freakerdude says:

If you like this line up, then you must think today’s music is just freaking awesome. This year is lame as lame can be. B-52′s and Better Than Ezra are washed up, with the latter having only 2 hits back in 1993 and 1995. Do we need to hear Loveshack just one more time? Sister Hazel, how lame can they get? ZZ Top has sounded horrible in the last 5 years from seeing their live material on Paladia. Has beens…all of the above.

Ben Harper is the only true talent here. And add Charlie Daniels> Jazz Sunday is now non existent and the old folks will be crying foul.

The reality of the matter is this…..Sunfest is geared towards a family oriented event and that is bottom line. You will never see controversial acts at this festival. Hard rock?….not this year at Sunfest.

  22. James says:

Freaker you want talent? Make sure you watch Flogging Molly.

  23. Keith says:

Another Sunfest with a crappy line up of entertainment. I do not see why they cannot get current performers and groups. Palm Beach County and SunFest have become a big city and event and I do not see why they can only get “has been” “washed up” acts to perform. I will not go again this year. However, ZZ Top and Patti LaBelle are trhe only decent onces worth seeing.

  24. I can be a frog says:

The Flaming Lips are known for their live shows. Have been waiting to see them for along time!! If you don’t know them don’t go so I can get a better seat and don’t have to listen to all you annoying people who talk during the shows.

  25. Thank you Sunfest says:

FreakerDude. What can of sourpuss pills do you take when you get out of bed in the morning.

You are the posting like the kind of person who would whine and complain no matter what lineup was presented. Please. Don’t go to Sunfest. Sit at Home and Yell at FOX news all weekend. Loser.

50 concerts. $54 Dollars. Weezer. Flaming Lips. Rage Against. etc., etc.

Plus, SunFest is just a great long weekend on the water.

This will be the biggest SunFest ever.

You would pay more than $54 to See Weezer play live in some dingy auditorium.

    Thank you SunFest Committee.

    Really! :)

  26. Tom says:

This is, by far, the best lineup since I moved her in ’96. By far! Acts like Ben Harper and The Flaming Lips are at their height of creativity. Not the canned American Idol b.s. – real musicians. Kudos! If you started working on it now, maybe you could book Wilco for 2011 . . .

  27. PBC Resident says:

What’s with the prices? $30 for one day???? Then you pay $10 to park in a crime area. Another $10 for a beer. Another $10 for a tiny burger. And when it rains, another $10 for a poncho.

I have yet to see a headliner at sunfest play for more than 40 minutes. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that these are real concerts.

At least Sunfest is now playing more rock acts. But, the organization still has an arrogant, snooty and greedy tinge to it. This festival has NOTHING to do with art or music and EVERYTHING to do about ripping off our rich yuppies. Sadly, many normal residents will also get ripped off.

  28. What?!? says:

I would have voted who I’d be most excited to see, BUT YOU DIDN’T HAVE SISTER HAZEL ON THE LIST.

    • John F. says:

They are probably playing the center stage,, which is good because you can see them up close without paying $20 for a reserved seat.

  29. DBNhellspawn says:

This is a decent line-up with something for almost everyone. I’m looking forward to seeing ZZ Top, Flogging Molly and Rise Against (who usually sell out their shows all over Florida, so they are hardly has beens. All they really need to add is a METAL band and that would really make this an event for all of the residents of WPB. For locals bands that should be added I’d recommend War Pigs, Riff Raff, Death Becomes You and Afterfall.

  30. tony bronx says:

What happened to the jazz lineup of the past the only name I see is Marcus Miller if he is really on the lineup? The rock lineup is ok if thats your bag, but where is the diversity?

  31. John F. says:

I work, so I usually go on the weekends, and I am disappointed ZZ Top is scheduled for Thursday night. An act like ZZ Top should have been Saturday or Sunday. But since they are playing Friday in Melbourne, maybe that was the only day they could play.

  32. Love Sunfest says:

    PBC Resident:

Please stay home at your Trailer Park and listen to Britney Spears and Julio Igelsias on your Ipod, drinking stale beer…..we will have more fun without you and you will save money.

You are complaining about $54 for 5 days of entertainment? What rock do you live under?

I have seen the best concerts in my life at Sunfest, including acts like Pennywise and Parliament Fukadelic.

    They play plenty long sets.

And its the Best Venue in the country.

    The WPB Waterfront is unbeatable.

  33. chuckp says:

i guess mozart, beethoven, hendrix, zeppelin, satriani, billy colbham, miles davis and the like are also “has beens”? my opinion is that classics are classics no matter how old – some music is just so cool that it stands the test of time. in today’s music world, it is all about style and little about substance – these modern “musicians” that concentrate more on the look than the sound will never be “has beens” – in fact they are “never should have beens”…

  34. Marko says:

Best line-up ever, I’ll buy the $54 tix fer sure, and bring a flask of JD!!!

  35. Gov't Mule says:

The absolute worst thing about Sunfest are all of the people chit chatting while the bands are playing. What a total disgrace these people are to ruin live music for those who are there to listen. Mizner Park is another venue where people talk too much.

5 day ticket – $54 at TD Bank all March
    Parking – $50 for 5 days.
    Something is wrong here…..

  36. TJ says:

Where is the home flavor , like Jimmy Buffett

  37. Ricky says:

Did someone say ZZ Top was coming?

  38. Gail says:

I would have voted also but where is Rise Against or Shinedown??? I will be there May 1st. Finally a Saturday with a great lineup

  39. fastfinger says:

I hope the organizers make a special effort this year and every year to feature Florida talent.

  40. Bee says:

This is a great lineup. I just hope they stagger the start times of the headliners. I would like to catch some ZZ Top on Thursday but the highlight for me is The Flaming Lips who are playing the same night. I agree that people flapping their gums while the bands are playing is the worst. I’m not afraid to let them know it. Don’t let the cellphone obsessed ruin the show for you. Two great local bands I’ve seen recently are Stonefox & Elephant Gun…

  41. David says:

Sunfest is here! My favorite parts are (in no particular order)
1 – The drunk guys with no shirt!
2 – The overpriced food! 20 minute wait for a room temperature $10 sausage, where is the food network for this stuff?
3 – The fat chicks with bad tattoos
4 – The parking! Walk a mile to Sun-fest and lose some weight on the way, and paying for the pleasure
5 – The teenage thugs with their caps on sideways!
6 – Musical acts so bad or out-dated I would not watch then for free on TV.
7 – Paying extra money for a good seat – genius!
8 – Closing the downtown area to traffic. That is good for the economy!
9 – The beads! Who does not have a home collection of those wonderful beads we have collected for the last 20 years.
10 – White trash AND alcohol! Sign me up!!

  42. Lineup is not bad! says:

I have to agree the I’m not a fan of the lineup. But remember this is many different genres over the weekend. SO all in all it’s a rather edgy lineup for a Waterfront show in Palm Beach. I mean Flaming Lips(Who suck I think) but do play many of the major festivals..>The rest of the line-up Is filled with many fillers. It’s a change for the better in regards to the lineup over past few years but all in all the concert and music bands out right now ask for too much money and most of the SUCK. Why do you think we see the same bands every year at Amp. Take some of your frustration on the line up out on the bands you like. Ask them why they would rather go to down south and make $125k and play in front of 3,000
instead of making $115K and play in front of 20k people. Simple as that. Bands are not helping the Touring industry.

  43. What about latin artists? says:

I believe SunFest is a music festival for South Floridians. How can you put on a music fest in South Florida and not have one latin act in the lineup? How can you totally ignore a market that size?

    • rachel says:

oh a side note: I agree with “What about latin artists?” I’m disappointed the lineup so far isn’t more diverse. It doesn’t even matter if you are latin or not, I’m a white kid from west palm and I think it’s disappointing to ignore the hispanic community we’ve got here. West Palm is a unique place with a blend of a million cultures, whoever is doing booking should probably spend some time letting culture in. :D

  44. rachel says:

I love g’s response… because I believe Weezer and the Flaming Lips are leaders of gangs, and THAT’S why I’m going to Sunfest. (note the sarcasm) hahaha You know, some more variation of music, and yes including jazz, would deffinitely be nice, but to be quite honest… I’m pretty proud of this lineup. It’s about time we got some good bands to jam to. These bands aren’t actually “HAS BEENS” as they usually are, in fact most are still recording, releasing music, heard on radios, or continuously touring. Good job, sunfest! It’s about time!

  45. I can be anything says:

The Flamming Lips! Has beens you say!!!
    3 time Grammy Winner.. 2 in 2007!!!
By some Headphones and listen to Yoshimi…

    ZZ top.

  46. trumny says:

For the many people who find it hard to cope with a death, grief counseling often can help them make the transition. Its goal is to help people grieve within a normal, healthy period of time and eventually resume their daily lives. Grief counseling can be a long-term process, a short-term affair or even a one-off, trumny and can occur on a one-to-one basis or in groups
