SunFest coverage: Food map, full schedule, photos, more

The Flaming Lips, who were scheduled to play Thursday night at SunFest, have canceled their performance due to the hospitalization of guitarist Steven Drozd (pictured at right).

Noted for incredible live shows, The Lips were one of two bands who were to close Thursday’s shows, the other being ZZ Top.

In a statement, SunFest representatives said: “We regret any inconvenience that this may cause. The performance of any band is in the hands of the artists, not the festival. As a result, our longstanding policy is that the schedule is subject to change and no refunds will be given for festival tickets. Festival tickets are good for any one day of the five days.”

  1. Pico Nemenze says:

WHo cares. this band sucks. thank god these loser goats are out of our hair. holy crap.

  2. Joe says:

    EVERYONE… DON’T GO TO SUNFEST

  3. Joe Boles says:

How sad. My thoughts and prayers are with Steven Drozd for a speedy recovery.

As for Pico Nemenze, he is just upset that Ricky Martin or Jennifer Lopez aren’t playing. It’s SUNfest, not SPAINfest.

  4. MR. R says:

In the future I would like as I am sure many others would, what acts are coming before purchasing tickets. In past years there was an excitement generated because you knew there would always be at least 4 top performers..not this year. The “who do you think will be playing on stage number one, number two, or number three” concept with the price of tickets today..oh well, time to change the approach and make it less mysterious.

  5. WHO? says:

….and there goes the only reason I was even considering going to lamefest.

    • KT says:

Agreed. I have seen Flaming Lips several times and I was excited for this performace. Even if you don’t like their music they are one of the BEST live shows out right now. I wish Steven Drozd a speedy recovery. It is a huge disappointment.

  6. freakerdude says:

I heard Right Said Fred is taking their place.

  7. cws says:

Sunfest is so out of touch. Didn’t even book Flaming Lips on the main stage. It is a festival with such an identity crisis. There’s usually a cool band or two, but when you throw in REO Speedwagon and Patti Labelle, you can’t expect to be taken seriously.

  8. Real Music says:

    lol@ Trevor – I’m sure you’re spot on!

Too bad – this band’s live shows are phenomenal. Hope they come next year.

  9. Sinatra fan says:

Resurrect some old Tiny Tim music and play it. antyhign is better than this crap. This guy probably got sick from hearing his own “music.”

  10. Dr. Phil says:

CWS – are REO and Patti Labelle realy going to be there? If so I may just go after all.

  11. Coolguy says:

Any chance they can get Dexy’s Midnight Runners to take their place?

  12. Gov't Mule says:

A silent stage would sound much better

@ Sinatra fan – “Sick of his own music”….hahaha

  13. marie says:

I will pray for all of you that are so selfish and care only about themselves instead of offering I hope he feels better………….

  14. Max Weinberg says:

Mr. R – Sunfest post the acts on their website MONTHS before the festival. There may be a few last minute additions, but its not very hard to find out who will be there well in advance.

And for you whiners, the older established artists bring in the folks who spend money, buy artwork, and patronize the exhibitors long after the festival is over. It’s not just a 5 day party for bingers and wankers.

    • Jenn says:

If you want to buy concert tickets, you used to have to buy them before you knew who was playing which stage – it was hit or miss. Also, if you buy Club Sunfest tickets, it would be nice to know if you want to go all 5 nights or just one.

    • Mr. R says:

Max, the acts are listed after the Club Sunfest members buy their tickets. And that is done to get the best seats. Are you the drummer Max? I agree, put the music acts on the bill for the people who pay the bill initially by buying the complete Sunfest package.

  15. marie says:

YOU GO MR. WEINBERG !!!!!! I AM SMILING

  16. Flaimng Lips fan says:

Very bad news. I hope for a speedy recovery for Steven.

To all you haters: you still have ZZ Top to look forward to. Charlie Daniels too. As a 50 year old music fan, I could say I’ve been a fan of ZZ Top and even Charlie Daniels. But my taste in music has changed. I’ve been there, done that. There’s a lot of good music out there, you just have to be open. Classic rock is just that: Classic rock. If that’s all you listen to, you’ll never broaden your musical taste, and I feel sorry for you and what you’re missing out on.

I have seen Flaming Lips twice and it has to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. And it’s true, you don’t have to know their music to enjoy the performance. It’s that good. I was going to bring a few of my friends and share the experience. I think there will be significantly less people there Thursday night now and Sunfest will see the size of the crowd the Lips would have drawn. Maybe next year… and maybe next year they’ll be on the big stage!

  17. Me says:

None of you knows anything about music so just show up and spend your money

  18. Carmoochs says:

THANKS! They totally suck!!! Bigger and better draws to buy your overpriced drinks and food… whatever.. how about GOOD TASTE LESS CRAP.

  19. Papa Snickey says:

Jeez why are there so many haters in this world? The festival will take a serious hit with the absence of this incredible band. They should have been booked on the mainstage as others suggest – and they would have sold out. That would have been a disaster! As for those complaining about buying tickets blind – it’s your choice. Buy early or wait. SunFest has done a great job this year with talent as there is something for almost everyone. In fact, they spent an additional $400,000 this year on talent I believe. I guess they’ll get some $$$ back with the Lips cancelling. More $$$ for next year’s line-up!

  20. Flaming who? says:

    The Flaming who?

  21. Carmoochs says:

Give the extra money to the Police department then..

  22. JohninBoca says:

It’s unbelievable all you people criticize the Flaming Lips. Why don’t you go listen to Do You Realize? and get acquainted with them. As for Pico, I’m with Trevor. You suck. Get better Drozd!!!! SunFest didn’t deserve you or your band.

  23. Pico's Mom says:

Pico- this is your Mom speaking. Your Dad and I have reached the conclusion that you are a total douche bag. We’ve piled all your nickelback CD’s by the curb. Time for you to move out.

  24. rdc says:

can i get a refund?? This is the only reason I bought sunfest tickets!!!

  25. stranger says:

Tragic! The Flaming Lips are marvelous, especially live. I’m giving away my Sunfest ticket . . . this band was the only reason I considered going in the first place. I hope they return to Florida soon.

  26. Carl says:

It’s ok everyone we still have some great headlining bands on the lineup like….REO Speedwagon and uh…..ZZ Top? Sean Kingston?

In all seriousness it looks this fan’s going to bonnaroo.

  27. naught says:

I’ve never been a fan of the robot/bubble/rollercoaster/wacky stylings of the Lips. But Drozd is an amazing person and an even more amazing musician. Here’s hoping he gets well soon (and goes solo).
