54 years of fun, fast rides, food at Martin County Fair

By Janis Fontaine

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

For 54 years, the Martin County Fair & Livestock Show has delivered a solid lineup of animal exhibits, concerts, thrilling rides, games, fair food and tons of old-fashioned family fun. Today, one talented teen will earn the crown and sash — and a lot of new responsibilities — as Miss Martin County Fair when the pageant concludes.

Of course, you’ll find an extensive livestock show, but animal lovers will get a dose of the exotic at the daily sea lion show. The skills of the men in the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show deliver the kind of entertainment you only find at the fairgrounds.

There’s also plenty of local entertainment, including dance companies, choirs, bands and solo acts at the fair, plus a few national acts. Highlights include:

  • The Moonshine Bandits, a rootsy duo from California, seem more at home on a front porch in Kentucky. They mix country with hip hop and spoken-word rhymes, are heavy on the percussion and liberal with twang. At 8 p.m. Saturday.
  •

Gospel music is on the agenda throughout the day on Sunday.

  •

Florida Georgia Line, the duo of Brian Kelley (from Ormond Beach) and Tyler Hubbard (from Monroe, Ga.), hit a homerun right out of the box with “Cruise.” Their debut album, released in December, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard country albums chart and is still in the Top Five. Catch them at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

  • Jana Kramer left behind an acting career to release a country album — and her fans ate it up. “Why You Wanna” became a mainstay on country radio and television for much of 2012. Her album is a blend of kiss-off songs and sentimental love songs. Hear her at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
  • Latin Music Night with “American Idol” contestant Jorge Gabriel takes place Feb. 16.
