The show called PBC:ART at the Palm Beach Cultural Council has only a vague theme - a lot of the works revolve around nature - but it has energy and vibrance and, often, a technical assurance that’s not always the case with local artists.
The media is mixed, the styles vary. Jose Delbo’s “Beatles Yellow Submarine,” is an homage to the animated film in the form of an enlarged comic book page, with some frames in black and white, some in color. Karla Walter’s “Murder of the Crows” is a series of five sculptures of crows - or perhaps it’s one crow five times - that comes complete with sound effects. It’s like an Eadward Muybridge photograph in three dimensions.
Richard Frank’s “Watcher” is a carefully rendered watercolor of an owl in a crowded composition that also features a flamingo sticking his beak in. It’s exceedingly well-drawn, but it also coheres as a unified statement of which John James Audubon would have approved. Following with the nature theme is Malcolm Mckenzie’s “Here’s Looking at You,” an amusing photograph of a giraffe staring impassively at the viewer. (Why don’t giraffe’s show expression? Discuss).
It’s a pleasure to see figurative painting continue its comeback, as with Beatrice Doone Merena’s “Odalisque,” which is a variation on 19th century paintings of luxurious courtesans. The originals, as well as the Merena painting, show their women nude from the back. In the corner is a smoking brazier (symbolism!) and a tray of oranges.
There are a couple of vibrant abstracts, notably Carolyn Barth’s “Freedom Train,” all yellows, green and blues, and Rita Shapiro’s “Barney Was Here,” which seems to be centered on the blinding yellow of the Florida sun. The most intriguing combination of techniques comes with Sherer and Ouporov’s “Hannah,” a small portrait of a girl done in extremely demanding egg tempera, with gold leaf accents and thousands of beads filling out the composition. The style is intricate, and the mixed media marks it as modern in terms of execution, although the message - serene innocence bathing in luxury - is timelessly retro.
