Talented collage artist Bruce Helander brings his one-man show to ArtHouse 429. His new works are on display now and a percentage of the net proceeds from the exhibit will be donated to Autism Speaks.

Along with collages and paintings, his show offers two new sculptural works created from materials discovered near the artist’s studio in downtown West Palm Beach.

One piece, titled “Underworld Drifter,” is made out of tubular ocean sponge parts that Helander found washed up on the beach. The connected forms produce a bizarre, colorfully spray-painted “stick figure” that stands on a base covered with other marine-related objects.

Helander has been experimenting with new techniques that allow his original paper collages to be transferred electronically to raw canvas on a much larger scale. He selects small collages from his studio that will conform appropriately to an expanded size and successfully retain the original “blueprint.” After the canvas is stretched, Helander over paints the surface with a variety of media, from acrylic paints and glitter to spray paint and stencils.

Helander’s work is represented in more than fifty permanent collections, including the Whitney, Metropolitan, Guggenheim, and Smithsonian.

The exhibit runs through Mar. 16.
