After undergoing a $20 million rebuilding, but before opening to the public on Sunday, the new Elliott Museum is getting once-over by members of the media today.

The “Pink Lady,” built in 1961, has been replaced with a 48,000-square-foot, environmentally friendly structure. Besides a complete physical transformation, the Elliott has undergone a major change in attitude, as well, focusing on how innovation and originality have changed the course of history on the Treasure Coast and beyond.

For example, the Elliott’s collection of antique automobiles has become “The Wheels of Change.” The 50-plus vehicles are on an innovative, three-story racking system in which a visitor selects a vehicle, and a small robot brings the vehicle from its storage slot to a turntable for closer viewing.

Perhaps no one in history has been more innovative than artist/inventor Leonardo da Vinci, and the first visiting exhibit to the new museum is “Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion.”

The exhibit features 40 full-size machines made from da Vinci’s ahead-of-their-time drawings. Museum visitors will be able to touch and operate many of the inventions.

The da Vinci exhibit will be replaced in October with the Elliott’s collection of artifacts from the Ais Indians, some of the earliest known residents of the Treasure Coast. The pieces have been in storage because the old museum building did not have adequate climate control.

The exhibit will be at the Elliott until Sept. 2.
