When Lou Galterio sings tunes associated with Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and Frank Sinatra, the sound of his rich baritone fills the hall. But he really blows the roof off of Francis Scott Key.
“Singing the National Anthem is one of the hardest things in the world. If you can sing that, you can sing anything,” says the 41-year-old Boynton Beach resident.
Galterio, who performed this past weekend at the Feast of Little Italy in Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter, will take the field at the Superdome in New Orleans tonight, when the Saints face the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football.”
It’s unclear if ESPN will show the anthem instead of Ron Jaworski’s pregame analysis of Drew Brees’ success throwing into a cover two defense, but it’s worth tuning in to find out.
A former accountant, Galterio is no stranger to singing in sports arenas. He’s Star-Spangled Banner-ed it for the Dolphins, Heat, Marlins and Panthers.
“All of a sudden they announce your name and you can hear a pin drop, and everyone’s waiting for you to open your mouth and sing,” he says. “Preparation is key, to try and not hold back. Don’t second-guess your abilities. You just want to go out there and say, ‘You know what? I’m just going to nail this’.”
Galterio’s journey to the Big Easy began in July, when he was featured in The Palm Beach Post’s Accent section prior to his appearance at West Palm Beach’s Fourth on Flagler.
Tom Benson, owner of the Saints, and his wife Gayle were apparently in town, Galterio says, and saw the article. Benson told his staff to book Galterio for a Saints game this season.
“I was just blown away by that, and I’m still riding on that cloud,” says Galterio, who will arrive in New Orleans this afternoon. A limousine will ferry him to his hotel for a brief rest, and then on to the Superdome for sound check. He’ll watch the game from a VIP box and fly home Tuesday morning.
He was allowed to bring a guest and selected his 18-year-old nephew, Kris, who lives in Broward County. Say Galterio, “It’ll be something he’ll remember his whole life.”
