Sailfish Marina, just over the Blue Heron bridge onto Singer Island, brings hundreds of folks down along the dock for music, food, arts and crafts and, of course, the sunset each Thursdays. The splendid settings’ only challenge is parking. At the marina, you can valet or pay $5 to self-park. There’s an overflow lot about a 3 block walk, but it’s not very big. There is no parking allowed along the streets.

With that caveat, here are five reasons to check out the Sunset Celebration at Sailfish Marina:

The artists: Set along the edge of the dock you’ll find as many as 30 vendors, showing off their handmade wood and stone sculpture, pottery and paintings, blown glass and home decor, and gold and silver jewelry. There’s also plenty of shopping in the marina’s Ship’s Store.

1. The music: Palm Beach County native Clark Rodriguez loves island music and Jimmy Buffett and that makes him a natural for the weekly outdoor concert. But you might see a steel drum band, or some other acoustic act. Given the choices of busking in a New York subway and on a dock next to a $300,000 sport fishing boat, the choice is obvious.
2. The food: The Sailfish Marina Restaurant sets up a stand along the waterfront to sell their popular grouper dogs and conch fritters. If you’re ready to sit down, or want something more formal, the Sailfish Restaurant a full menu and view of the sunset over the water.
3. The ambiance. The water is so clear that you can easily see fish and marine life, not to mention an abundance of birds. The spirit is upbeat and friendly. And you can bring Fido. Keep in mind there’s not a lot of space. Most of the dogs were purse pups.
4. The marina. Able to accommodate boats as long as 110 feet, the marina offers lots of opportunities to dream big. The boats are glorious examples of maritime ingenuity and style. It’s alwasy fun to watch the boats return from a day fishing, with their happy, sunburned fisherman and their catch of the day. You might even hear a fish story or two.
5. The setting: In 2001, Terry Pratchett wrote, “They allow … sunsets in ridiculous pink and blue hues that any professional artist would dismiss as the work of some enthusiastic amateur who’d never looked at a real sunset.” It’s true: The colors that explode where the water meets the sky are almost gaudy, but they are celebrated “oohs” and “aahs,” and a great deal of satisfaction.
