Cocktail Culture: Dockside Citrus Splash

By Staci Sturrock

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

This week’s bar: Dockside Sea Grille

The scene: From the potted palms and cheerful yellow paint out front, to the fiberglass fish and crabs mounted on the walls inside, to the waterside tables out back, Dockside Sea Grille has a pleasantly old Florida look and a casual, kick-back-and-relax feel. And on July 16, Dockside will welcome a sister concept in the empty storefront next door: Dockside Dollar Grille. The eatery will include a $1-an-item buffet and a $1 bar. “Dollar General and dollar stores all do very well,” says owner Liz Turner. “Everybody’s looking for a good deal.”

The signature cocktail: A treat for the palate and the eyes, the Dockside Citrus Splash ($8), is a deliciously fruity alternative to what’s become a potable standard. “Everyone does a mojito,” says manager Gilberto Alvarez, “so we wanted something different.” The garnish of a rock candy swizzle stick provides a whimsical finishing touch to a cocktail with a smooth finish.

Other noteworthy drinks: The Lake Park restaurant is mad for martinis and offers a selection of tinier ‘tinis for $4, all day everyday. The Honeydew Martini, whose ingredients include orange vodka, melon liqueur and two kinds of fruit juice, has an electric green color and a pleasant kick.

Bar bites: It’s all about the fruits of the sea, from standbys like smoked fish dip ($10.95) and clams and mussels ($12.95), to different dishes like Buffalo calamari ($11.95) and seafood flatbread ($16.95).

Deals: From 4 to 7 p.m. daily, house cocktails are two for one (as are draft beers and house wines all day). Hungry? Dockside offers a cash-only sunset special on Tuesdays and Thursdays: two salads, entrees (with sides) and desserts for the price of one.
