The trendsetters of Northwood are running on new fuel.

This quaint, bougainvillea-lined hot spot has been drawing the foodies, the antiquaries and the day-trippers for years. They come to West Palm’s Northwood Village not just to shop at the independent stores or dine at the acclaimed restaurants , but to visit the district itself, a funky destination.

Now they can build a stop at Harold’s Coffee Lounge into the itinerary – or better yet, start their day off on the right, if jittery, foot.

Just like other coffee meccas in town, Habitat and Oceana, Harold’s exists for the coffee-obsessed.

“We can pretty much make anything you want,” barista Cody Born tells me.

He seems almost disappointed when I lamely ask for a cappuccino with a shot of homemade, flavored syrup. Then again, he was once almost stumped when he fielded a request for an iced cappuccino. He wasn’t quite sure what to do, since he was working with mainly foam — so he added whipped cream on top.

In the evenings, Harold’s offers movie nights, drum circles, poetry slams, and art and jazz nights.

Outside, making their mark in the urban setting are hanging planters full of peppermint, spearmint, lemon verbena and basil – little touches urging you to linger longer over your coffee. As if you need the excuse.
