Are you looking for stocking stuffers, or nice bottles to bring to holiday events? Here are some suggestions in all price ranges, and both red and white (OK, there’s just one white reviewed here, but it counts!). I included a couple of reviews from Swirl Girl Jennifer Podis, too.

2009 Val Di Suga Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Italy ($16.36 online) — This light red-pink wine has a light cherry nose, with some raspberries thrown in for a slightly sweeter smell. Very appealing even before tasting it. Then I tasted soft sour cherries. This is a light-bodied wine that goes well with cheese snacks or pizza. It’s a hefty 14 percent alcohol, but doesn’t taste hot.

2011 Quivira Sauvignon Blanc, Fig Tree Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Calif. ($22 online) – This winery is one of my favorites, so I was eager to try the new sauvignon blanc. It stood up to my expectations. It was a pretty pale yellow-green color with a tropical nose that included melon and honeysuckle. On taste, it was tart pineapple, some coconut and green apple, but layered with some flintiness. It’s a crisp, clean and very dry wine, with a short finish.

2010 The Climber Red Wine, Calif. ($12.99 online) – This is a red blend of merlot, petite sirah, zinfandel, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. It’s got a deep cherry nose that has red licorice highlights, so it smelled great. On taste, lots of red and black fruits, with some decent tannins. There was some licorice on taste, too, a medium-bodied wine that was better with food than by itself.

2009 Antica Antinori Family Estate, Napa Valley, Calif. ($56.99, ABC Fine Wine) – This is a big cabernet sauvignon that benefits from a decanter or aerator; it has a teeny amount of petit verdot in it. With a pretty red rose color, this wine has a strawberry-raspberry nose that’s very aromatic and sigh-worthy. On taste, it’s just delightful: cinnamon, vanilla notes with lots of strawberry and raspberry. It’s got a smooth mouthfeel and a long finish. By itself or with food, it’s a keeper.

From Earthy:

2009 Matchbook Tempranillo, Dunnigan Hills, Calif. ($14.99, crewwinestore.com) — With 88 percent tempranillo, 8 percent graciano and 4 percent cabernet sauvignon, the Matchbook has a ripe fruit aroma of cherry, red licorice, wood, and vanilla. The palate is a pleasing balance of fruit and acidity, with cherry predominant. It has a firm, medium body and while it’s not a complex wine, it’s also not simple. It’s just right for an everyday (or evening) sipper.

2008 Montes Alpha Carmenére, Colchagua Valley, Chile ($19.99, Total Wine) — Montes Alpha adds 10 percent cabernet sauvignon to the bottle, and right from the pour the aroma leaps from the glass. It smells plush and rich, with floral scents, blackberries, plum, and sweet vanilla. If velvet had an aroma, this would be it. The palate offers black cherry and blackberry, and is full-bodied, round and smooth. A definite keeper for your wine stock.
