Birthdays are all about indulging in your favorite foods – the ones you dream about when you’re on the treadmill or eating limp, overcooked vegetables. But when a bad migraine shut down my birthday plans, a good friend knew just what to bring me: two fresh, soft Chinese Char Siu Pork Buns from Palm Sugar in West Palm Beach.

This eclectic little Asian eatery on Clematis Street has been serving up delicious street food for the past five months. They recently started serving breakfast as well – and those following a gluten-free diet should pay special attention to the a.m. menu. Palm Sugar now offers gluten-free choices such as a quiche puff and red quinoa breakfast cereal.

But back to those pork buns. A play off pulled pork sandwiches, the buns use Chinese five spice instead of barbecue sauce. Japanese mayo adds a layer of flavor. You get two hearty buns for $8. The luscious, steamed rice bun, often used in Chinese cuisine, is perfectly soft – like a pillowy, soft hug. The meat is slow-roasted and served with cucumbers, scallions and cilantro. The buns are also available in beef and duck for $9.

In addition to Palm Sugar’s comfort food or street food (items like chicken hearts and gizzards, pork belly, and yummy stir-fried veggies), it also has an extensive and enticing dessert menu, including a dizzying array of cupcakes. Try the signature Pink Grapefruit and Lavender Cupcake ($3 each or $1 for a mini).
