You won’t find beer or wine on the menu at this little neighborhood restaurant – which is far cuter and more elegant on the inside than you would ever guess from its exterior at the nondescript strip mall in which it resides.

Most of the staff is in recovery at Moran’s, and the menu bolsters its efforts.

“We provide a safe environment for people who are in recovery,” said the general manager Dawn D’Uva. “We don’t serve beer and alcohol.”

What they do serve is traditional and unique shakes and floats ($4.99 for a premium variety) – think cotton candy, cake, chocolate bacon, passion fruit or panna cotta on the shake front. Or try a float: cucumber, Key Lime, rhubarb, blood orange, lavender or juniper berry (which I can personally recommend).

Lining the lounge area of this eight-month-old eatery are comfy couches. And you may need to lounge a bit to take in the menu options — don’t be surprised if it takes you a good ten minutes to decide on what to order.

Even though Moran’s claims to be just an “Italian Burger Bistro,” it’s got the gourmet neighborhood eatery thing figured out. The brick-oven pizzas come fast, hot and perfect in one size (16 inches) ranging from the six-cheese pizza to Margherita to a Bacon Cheeseburger to Roasted Pear and Pecan and beyond. We ordered the Earth Pizza and delighted in their blend of mushrooms, artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, hearts of palm, asparagus and topped with arugula.

And when you’re in a place where BYOB means Build Your Own Burger, well, you build your own burger ($9.99). Mine was stuffed with goat cheese, served on a ciabatta roll, topped with roasted garlic, mesclun and roasted eggplant and served alongside long, elegant French fries that did not disappoint. Though next time I’ll get the truffle French fries – all in the name of research.

Moran’s: 2107 10th Avenue North, Lake Worth; open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 11 p.m.; 561-318-5048; www.MoransLakeWorth.com
