They’re downright crave-able, the stone crabs of South Florida. They’re meaty, sweet, and heavenly when spritzed with lemon and dipped into drawn butter or creamy-hot mustard. Give me a few claws and a glass of vino, and I’m happy.

So where do you go when you crave good, plump stone crab claws during the October 15th to May 15th stone crab season?

Here are five places worth trying:

1) COD & CAPERS. This North Palm Beach market and café, which purveys some of the county’s freshest, locally caught fish and seafood, offers one of the best deals in town on Wednesday nights: One pound of fresh Florida stone crabs, with mustard sauce and coleslaw, is served for $19.95 (medium claws), and $26.95 (large). The stone crab special runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the café. You can also take them to go, out of the case, for $17.95 (medium) and $27.95 (large). Reservations are not taken on stone crab night, but they are (for parties of six and larger) during the café’s regular hours, which are Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday to 8 p.m. Stone crabs are always on the menu during season, but the special prices apply only to Wednesday nights.

2) CAPTAIN CHARLIE’S REEF GRILL. Have some meaty claws at this Juno Beach strip-plaza favorite as an appetizer, before you dig into the stellar hog snapper or perfectly flash-fried whole yellowtail snapper. The half-pound of gently cracked medium claws goes for $13.99, whole pound for $27.99, both served with mustard sauce. “They’ve been flying off the menu,” says hostess Caitlin Thomas.

The eatery is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, Sunday for dinner starting at 5 p.m.

3) SEAFOOD BAR AT THE BREAKERS. Because if there’s anything better than fresh stone crab claws, it’s stone crab claws served with a spectacular view. This is the place for that close-up oceanfront view. The claws here are enormous and sold by the piece, $20 per jumbo-sized claw, $32 per colossal-sized claw. One meat-packed jumbo suffices as a starter. Follow that with a hearty bowl of New England-style clam chowder ($9.75) that’s served in the perfect sourdough bowl – the bread bowl is warm and crisp on the outside and nicely doughy on the inside – and you’ve got a gorgeous meal.

This spot, which doesn’t take reservations, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

4) GULFSTREAM BISTRO & SEAFOOD MARKET. Eat your claws here or take them to go. One pound of medium claws goes for $26.95, served with new potatoes and coleslaw; large claws go for $29.95 a pound.

Gulfstream is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 10 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 9 p.m.

5) PB CATCH. One of Palm Beach County’s finest raw bars serves fresh cracked claws. Have them as a main course after starting your meal with an exquisite oyster sampler, which runs about $17 to $18 for six oysters on a half shell, depending on what’s fresh and available.

The claws themselves are available in four sizes, sold per claw: $13 for large, $18 for extra large, $26 for jumbo and $42 for colossal.

The bar and lounge, which offer terrific raw bar deals, opens at 4:30 p.m. daily, the dining room at 5:30 p.m. every night.
