Get your delicious empanada fill at Argentinian Deli

By Lona O'Connor

MENU

A small menu that hits all the basics, salads and sandwiches, baked goods and flan. There is a display case featuring meats and cheeses (that’s the deli part), and one wall includes a few Argentinian grocery items, including tea.

ATMOSPHERE

This place would be easy to miss, a small shop in a strip mall a few doors down from a head shop. Yes, it does look like a hole in the wall, but the irresistible aroma of grilling beef and chicken will draw you in. This is a delicatessen with a few tables for those who just can’t make it to the car with their bounty.

OUR FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE

You never know if the skirt steak is going to be cooked just right, but we needn’t have worried. The foot-long skirt steak sandwich ($13.98) was remarkably tender, with just enough heat in the spice mix to make it interesting. The grilled chicken sandwich ($6.59 for lunch, including two sides) was equally delectable. And the chicken caesar salad ($6.59 for lunch, including two sides), not an expected part of the Argentinian culinary repertoire, was fine too. All six flavors of empanada were delicious, with the sweet corn empanada the most unusual, from a North American point of view.

REASON TO GO

Are their empanadas the best in town? This is a highly subjective question, a topic for endless debate among Latin Americans for sure. However, a woman at lunch on a recent day said, “There are no empanadas better than my mother used to make, but these are almost as good.”

SERVICE

Pretty fast, considering the size of the two orders that happened to come in simultaneously.

NOISE LEVEL

Nice and quiet.

KID FRIENDLY

Of course. They have hot dogs, and kids will go for the gooey cheese-filled empanadas.
