THE PLACE: What’s the point of living in paradise if you stay inside on a crisp, gorgeous day? This was the autumn sky’s unspoken invitation on a recent Saturday. We responded by heading to Jupiter Beach, north along scenic A1A, until we arrived at the Lazy Loggerhead Café, the lemon yellow building that sits at the edge of the beach at Carlin Park. Just steps from the ocean, the place is infused with a beachy, flip-flops feel, offering a terrace breeze and a back-window view of sand and seagrape sprawl. Here, owner Brian Wilson also offers homey breakfast and lunch dishes for beach-goers and passersby alike. The beach may draw visitors to his place, but it’s the fresh, flavorful food that keeps them coming back.

THE FOOD: Come to the Lazy Loggerhead for lunch and you’ll find fresh fare that exceeds beach shack expectations. Start with a cup of hot, creamy New England clam chowder ($3.75 cup, $4.95 bowl), rich and thick with clams and potatoes, and you won’t be disappointed. Follow that with a fillet of lightly blackened dolphin (market price, which currently is $14.25 sandwich, $17.25 platter, $17.25 salad), and you’ll taste some of the freshest fish around. This is not an eatery that serves 10 types of fish. Here, there’s usually dolphin and, only if the price is right, tuna on the daily menu. But if it’s just dolphin, then it’s dolphin that you order – and you’ll love. If you order your fish as a platter, you’ll get a heaping portion of citrus-scented rice that’s topped with thick black beans and a squiggle of lime cream, and an artistically presented side of fresh, skewered fruit.

Other highlights include the grilled Reuben sandwich ($11.50): crisp, oversized slices of hand-cut rye filled with a generous amount of juicy, bottom-round corned beef, melted Swiss, warm kraut and a good smear of Thousand Island dressing. That sandwich arrives with crispy, thick-cut fries and, perhaps, the best coleslaw I’ve tasted in a while, a sweet, creamy rendition. The lunch menu also offers a range of large salads, burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches, and chicken breast platters.

The extensive breakfast menu offers all the diner classics at inexpensive and moderate prices.

THE SERVICE: It was as sunny as the day, on the recent (very sunny) Saturday of our visit – friendly, informed, and efficient.

BEST REASON TO RETURN: To dig into a fresh dolphin sandwich.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Food and service B+
