New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t exist – not in a world that makes lobster claws, as does Mario’s Market in Delray Beach.

This sweet claw is huge, so big it comes in a box that looks like it should house a box turtle. Covered in powdered sugar and a nice swoosh of cannoli cream, and it’s filled with the same delicious cannoli cream, the lobster claw probably will negatea marathon’s worth of running.

Oh, but this pastry is delectable. Made with phyllo dough, stacked and baked, the lobster claw is then filled with the cream (it also comes in a Bavarian cream). It weighs more than three-fourths of a pound – closer to one pound, if you really want to know – all for $3.99.

If you’d like to feel a little healthier, you can take a few laps around the market, and browse the other goodies that Mario’s has to offer. Known for delicious meats and deli, Mario’s makes mozzarella twice a day, as well as its own sausages, breads, cooked foods, salads, and all of the pastries, including the aforementioned lobster claw. It also sells produce, imported Italian cheeses, imported Italian groceries and prepared frozen foods.

“We’ll try to accommodate you as best as we can, whether we have to make it or special order it – we’ll try and get you whatever you need,” said Kristina Ricci, Mario’s youngest daughter and part-owner.

Kristina’s father, Mario, started the market about 25 years ago in a different location. Mario passed away five years ago, and Kristina and her mother, Linda, and sister, Michelle, took over the market.

“It just kept growing,” Ricci said.
