OPENINGS: The Little House, Boynton Beach

This little house harbors some big things – the dreams of a restaurateur, the revitalization hopes of a city, and the heart it took to move a historic structure, renovate it and give it a new life.

Boynton’s historic Ruth Jones Cottage is now The Little House, a tavern and small-plates eatery that is the domain of plucky restaurateur Chrissy Benoit (formerly of Havana Hideout). It’s an adorable little cottage, all 823 square feet of it, with cool blue walls framed by a ceiling of warm Dade County pine panels that were reclaimed and restored.

The 1940 wood-frame cottage, which was moved six blocks to its Ocean Avenue location last month, now serves some 20 craft beers on draft and Benoit’s eclectic plates and bar bites. The menu includes dishes like chicken stew with homemade herb dumplings, pickled beet and toasted walnut salad with cilantro and balsamic-brown sugar dressing, ahi with fresh sliced cucumbers marinated in ponzu and warm pineapple upside-down cake.

“It’s all just fun food that’s fun to eat,” says Benoit.

And there’s a cool little iPhone app for it (The Little House BB), which details the menu, specials and restaurant info.

KEEPING KOSHER

Darbster, the waterside vegan eatery in West Palm Beach, has always offered plenty of choices for diners who eat meat-free, those who eat raw and those who eat gluten-free.

Now it’s ready for diners who keep kosher.

The funky, open-air café (one of our favorite spots for Sunday brunch) recently received its Orthodox kosher certification. The certification came from Rabbi Zev Schwarcz, who directs the International Kosher Council.
