Some might believe this day belongs to the romantics, to those who have planned weddings, dreamed up engagements, consulted the spirit guides in hopes there’s magic in a date as perfect as 12/12/12.

But, truth be told, it belongs to food lovers. Why else would so many of life’s delicious things come in dozens?

In honor of today’s great culinary possibilities, we present some palate pleasers that come 12 to a box, platter or package.

Go on, enjoy, food enthusiasts. And by that we’re not suggesting you must consume 12 of everything or anything. Just treat yourself to your favorite by-the-dozen goodie.

After all, 12/12/12 comes around only once. Not to sound romantic, or anything.

TWELVE EGGS

Indulge. Reach for farm-fresh eggs harvested from cage-free chickens. During green market season there are great local eggs to be found, from farmers such as Svetlana Simon of the Heritage Hen Farm in Boynton Beach, and Robert and Paula Farriss of Farriss Farm in north county.

  • Find Heritage Hen Farm products at the Delray Beach market on Saturdays at Old School Square Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Or visit the farm store from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday at 8495 Haverhill Road, Boynton Beach; 561-767-9000.
  • Find Farriss Farm products at these local green markets: West Palm Beach GreenMarket at the Waterfront on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Palm Beach Gardens GreenMarket at Burns Road and Military Trail on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tequesta Green Market at Constitution Park on the first Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the FAU Boca campus green market on Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Or contact the farm directly at 561-352-6028 or at GreenTeam@FarrissFarm.com

TWELVE DOUGHNUTS

Pick up a dozen at Jupiter Donut Factory. But get there early — they often vanish before noon.

The small, family-owned shop sells a delectable selection of doughnuts. Daily specials include red velvet, egg nog, orange, blueberry and chocolate.

Jupiter Donut Factory is at 141 Center Street, Jupiter; 561-741-5290. Find them on Facebook (search “Jupiter Donut Factory” on Facebook) for the day’s flavors.

TWELVE OYSTERS

A dozen oysters on the half-shell is a noble way of celebrating 12/12/12. But why not take it to another level? Take your oysters in a delicious, briny shot at Imoto, chef Clay Conley’s Asian eatery on Palm Beach. Conley puts together these gorgeous little shots that taste of the sea. Sublime.

Of course, if you’d rather take the half-shell route, select a fresh-catch sampler platter from the raw bar at PB Catch, also on Palm Beach.

Imoto: 350 South County Road, Palm Beach; 561-833-5522.

PB Catch: 251 Sunrise Avenue, Palm Beach; 561-655-5558.

TWELVE BOTTLES OF WINE

Buy your wine by the dozen and chances are you’ll get a terrific deal on the case. Total Wine & More offers a 10 percent case discount on many wines with prices ending in “9.” (Discounts and promotions may vary.)

For store locations, visit www,TotalWine.com

TWELVE GRAPES

Embrace the Spanish New Year’s tradition that greets midnight with 12 savored grapes. If that ritual brings good fortune for the year, imagine what 12 grapes may promise on 12/12/12.

Red seedless grapes are $2.99 a pound at Publix.

TWELVE HOT DOGS

Get a regal Silver Service Kosher Hot Dog at the Palm Beach Grill, which bakes its own hot dog buns. It’s served with a deviled egg for $12.

The Palm Beach Grill is at 340 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach. For reservations, call 561-835-1077.

TWELVE BAGELS

Take your pick at the Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. We love the multi-grain bagel topped with a nova spread or scallion cream cheese. And we’ll take it with a Cubsta, an iced coffee that’s chilled with frozen coffee cubes.

To find a location near you, visit www.BrooklynWaterBagels.com.

TWELVE ORANGES

This is the last month to buy fresh-picked Florida navel oranges from Uncle Matt’s Organic produce.

Buy a bag at Publix, Whole Foods or BJ’s Wholesale. Check out the website at www.UncleMatts.com

TWELVE ROSES

Okay, the cliché. But with a twist: use the petals to make rose water. Blogger and food photographer Aran Goyoaga suggests using rose petals to infuse a custard base for ice cream or creme brulee.

To do this, gently simmer cream or milk with the petals of an unsprayed rose, remove from heat and allow mixture to cool. Strain before using.
