Two local chefs are poised to cross knives July 25 in the kitchen at Roy's Sushi Thai & Grill during its premiere Icon Chef competition, a duel inspired by the Food Network's popular show, Iron Chef America.
Guest chef and Jupiter resident, Kyle Greene, 26, said tickets are selling fast for the culinary competition where guests will judge who has the sharpest skills in the skillet. For $45, guests will get four courses, a dessert and a complimentary drink.
Guests will be able to watch the match from closed circuit televisions in the dining room. A local DJ will conduct interviews with the chefs and provide music.
"We want guests to open their minds culinary-wise," said Greene, a 2004 St. Lucie West Centennial High School graduate who went on to earn a degree from the Florida Culinary Institute in Palm Beach. "We want people to see new ways to prepare different ingredients and enjoy seeing the chefs cook live. It won't be like sitting on the couch."
Greene also worked as a chef at Emeril Lagasse's now-closed Miami Beach restaurant. He owned and operated Brick Wall Grille in Stuart before it closed and now mans the front of the house at the Capital Grille in Palm Beach Gardens.
Green will square off against Roy's owner and namesake, Roy Saraphan, 31, a Thailand native who learned to cook as a child at several relatives' restaurants in his homeland. He emigrated to the United States at 12 years old and started cooking at his aunt's Thai Day Restaurant in Palm Beach.
Saraphan, a Port St. Lucie resident, plans to make the event a monthly staple at the restaurant that has been at its St. Lucie West location for five years. Another competition will be Aug. 29 at his other restaurant, Sushi Naya, which also is in Port St. Lucie.
"The cooking world would be way better if we share ingredients and skills," said Saraphan who boasts authentic family recipes on his menus. "It's about sharing cultures."
Neither cook knows what dishes they will prepare. A secret ingredient will be drawn from a hat 24 hours before the showdown. Both plan to order fresh ingredients after the draw and will cook two courses.
Greene said Saraphan can expect a fierce, but friendly competition.
"He's going down," Greene said. "I hope he brings his Nikes to work that day."
Saraphan countered his opponent with fighting words of his own.
"Don't be sweat," Saraphan said in a thick Thai accent.
