Two exhibits opened recently, one on Palm Beach and the other in West Palm. Make a day of it and visit both.

“Reimagine – Reinvent: Photographers Redefining Reality” at the Holden Luntz Gallery on Palm Beach features photographers who visually construct new worlds for the purpose of creating photographic images.

“Cuban Connection: Contemporary Cuban-American Art from Florida,” on display at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, features the work of seven Cuban-American artists.

Looking at the photographs in Reimagine, you may wonder: Isn’t reality strange enough? Perhaps these photographers aren’t able to find an external reality which matches their internal reality, so they need to create one.

Whatever the reason, photographers aren’t passive flies on the wall waiting to capture an image any longer. Now they’re the impetus, the imaginer, the creator and sometimes even the subject.

“The challenge of the work is to find and explore desires, fears, beliefs and various ideas and give them a visual approximation,” gallery owner Holden Luntz wrote.

Photographers represented in the exhibit are Kimiko Yoshida, Teun Hocks, Sandy Skoglund, Valerie Berlin, Dianne Blell, Lynn Goldsmith, Bernard Faucon, Jamie Baldridge, Gilbert Garcin and Adrianne Wortzel.

Back on the mainland, the Armory Art Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary season with an exhibit that explores the Cuban Connection. This vibrant culture has permeated every area of life in South Florida, from our food to our music to every facet of artistic expression.

From Fabian Peña’s animalia to Martinez-Cañas “photo-based” works, you’ll find seven unique points of view, and diverse media, from painting to video. Rounding out the field are artists Luis Gomez, Dayron González, Omar Rodriguez, Arturo Infante Vieiro and Laimir Fano Villaescusa.
