Get ready to boogie woogie

By Janis Fontaine

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Some people call boogie woogie the father of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

John Tennison, founder of The Boogie Woogie Foundation, said boogie woogie is “the kind of Blues that has had the most influence on popular music.” The genre’s repetitive bass lines also became integral components of Big Band jazz and the foundation of jump blues.

But set aside the intellectual discussions, and you still have boogie woogie’s recognizable 8-beats-to-the-bar tempo that gets the toes tapping and the blood flowing. The Boogie Woogie Piano Festival brings a line-up of distinct styles of boogie to the stage: from Jim McKaba’s pure Chicago-style blues boogie, to Tom Worrell’s New Orleans blues boogie, to Kelley Hunt’s deep south boogie blues, and Lee Pons’ “Dr. John” New Orleans-style boogie.

Remember that the Arts Garage is “Bring Your Own Whatever.” Bring a bottle of wine, some munchies, a picnic basket or a full-course meal, but keep in mind they do not supply cups, cutlery or paper goods.

Schedule:

Jim McKaba, 8 p.m.

Tom Worrell, 9 p.m.

Kelley Hunt, 10 p.m.

Lee Pons, 11 p.m.
