Westminster is going digital!

The famed dog show, now in its 137th year, is kicking up the marketing-branding side and joining the 21st century. This year’s show, running tonight (on CNBC) and Tuesday (on USA Network), will be streaming live coverage of the breed judging, as well as supplying a smartphone show guide app to all attendees. More about that later.

The show organizers have taken things up a notch, too, with two venue sites for dog lovers. More fans can be accommodated, more money taken for tickets and that means winning all the way around. One site is the usual glamorous Madison Square Garden show ring, where collective breaths will be held before winners are announced.

The other arena is not far away, The Piers on 55th Street, and will be for breed judging and benching, so spectators can interact with the show dogs and watch them being groomed and prepped for action. For those who’ve never been behind the scenes, this is worthwhile and a fairly unforgettable experience.

And in the midst of all this, the Russell Terrier and the Treeing Walker Coonhound will make their first official appearances as the two new breeds added to the mix.

As for the app — bright purple so you can’t ignore it – try it for show schedule, map and directory, live video during the show, a ‘Westminster 101’ primer, and all kinds of info about the judging program (who, what, where, when).
