Give the multiplex a rest.

The Lake Worth Playhouse’s Stonzek Theater, the city’s experimental black box, is running its third annual L-Dub Film Festival this weekend, highlighting films that moviegoers would otherwise not get to see at the big theaters.

The event, which runs from Friday-Sunday, opens with 3 Days of Hamlet, a first-person documentary about struggling with father issues, by television and screen actor Alex Hyde-White, who will host one of several filmmaking seminars throughout the weekend.

“We’re looking to present a venue for people who would otherwise not get their film on screen in front of an audience,” said festival director Charlie Birnbaum.

To wit, the festival will feature a wide range of films, from music videos and documentaries to short and feature-length movies. Zombie flick aficionados as well as music and dance choreography buffs will have something to look forward to.

Submissions came from as far and wide as Canada and Amsterdam and will run throughout the weekend. More than 25 short films and music videos will run constantly, offering a wide range of genres. There will even be several local student films screened.

“It’s a real mix,” Birnbaum said.

Hyde-White’s film will run for a week at the Stonzek after it debuts at the film festival. That’s catnip to young filmmakers who will have the opportunity to hear him and other professionals host a series of free Saturday seminars that are open to the public.

Hyde-White will discuss how to raise funds for and market a film. Writer/director Frank Eberling will hold an acting workshop and Miami screenwriter Michael Chasin will give a seminar on screenwriting.

Further, it is a chance for moviegoers and filmmakers to exchange ideas and network throughout the day.

“There’s a lot of interaction between the filmmakers, talking, trading ideas,” Birnbaum said.
