ATMOSPHERE

Fun and funky, the Mellow Mushroom is more than a pizza joint with its groovy vibe and sizable restaurant space just off Atlantic Avenue.

OUR FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE

We’d heard a lot about the food and it lived up to the fan reviews. The portobello mushroom stuffed with artichoke hearts, feta cheese and spinach ($8.99) was a great warm-up, and the hummus with veggies ($6.99) appetizer thrilled my young daughter. Veggies included cukes with the regular carrots and celery. The main attraction, however, was the pizza. The mighty meaty ($12.99 for small) was … “meaty,” according to my husband, who could barely eek out more with his mouth full. The kosmic karma ($12.99 for small) featured crazy green colors with its spinach and pesto swirl, but it hit all cylinders for me with red sauce, tomatoes and feta and mozzarella cheeses as well.

The food is excellent and the menu fun to explore.

Diane was very helpful to us first-timers, and she predicted correctly that we’d be back.

NOISE LEVEL

Saturday lunch brought in plenty of customers, but the tables leave enough space that you aren’t on top of anyone else and the hum of other diners didn’t drowned out your own conversation.

KID FRIENDLY

Absolutely. You don’t even need the kids menu with pizza, pretzels and sandwiches on the regular list.
