Lake Worth's Positively Africa adds new name, keeps groove

By Bill Meredith

When guitarist/vocalist Julius Sanna and singing wife Julia Sanna released their debut Introducing Positively Africa CD in January, the Lake Worth couple introduced one of the best local recordings of 2012.

The disc also features original members of the 3-year-old Positively Africa band (positivelyafrica.com) in saxophonist Bernard Bain and percussionist Marijah; its rhythm section since 2010 (bassist Cleveland Fredericks, drummer Rod Parker), and guest multi-instrumentalists Kevin Cowart, Jody Marlow and Carlomagno Araya on joyous tracks like Leo and Pendo.

Tanzania-born Julius and Kenya-born Julia named the group to counter the clichéd negative images of Africa they've encountered from some Americans since moving here in 1997. Those images have even made it difficult to get nightclub bookings. That, plus Julius' additional jazz, blues, pop and R&B talents, have necessitated a name shift.

"We'll still be Positively Africa for cultural events," he says, "like our African/African-American Summer Institute presentation at 9 a.m. on June 11." That's at the school district's headquarters near West Palm Beach.

"That night, we'll start calling ourselves the Julius Sanna Groove Band at restaurants and clubs when we play from 7-11 p.m. at B.B. King's."

See Positively Africa from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday at the Arts Park at Young Circle, 1814 Young Circle, Hollywood (954-921-3478). Julius also duets with singing harmonica player Clay Goldstein from 5-9 p.m. on Sunday at South Shores, 502 Lucerne Ave., Lake Worth (561-547-7656), and resumes his 4-8 p.m. solo slot on Saturdays in June at B.B. King's, 550 S. Rosemary Ave., West Palm Beach (561-420-8600).

Don't miss Dharmata (facebook.com/dharmatamusic) when the rising West Palm Beach hard rock act plays at 8 p.m. on Friday at Swampgrass Willy's, 9910 Alternate A1A, Palm Beach Gardens (561-625-1555) .

How do you make an Allman Brothers tribute group like the Lake Worth-based Marshall Brothers (marshallbrothersband.com) more authentic? Add Gregg Allman's oldest son, vocalist Michael Allman, who'll front the six-piece band from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturday at B.B. King's, 550 S. Rosemary Ave., West Palm Beach (561-420-8600) .

Bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn died in his sleep on May 13 after playing at the Blue Note in Tokyo. He was 70. With the electric bass having only been mass-produced for 60 years, the Memphis-born Dunn's Stax Records output has him on a short list with James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius and Paul McCartney for inventing modern groove playing on the instrument. I toured with area blues band The Hellhounds, managed by his son Jeff Dunn, in 2005-06. Playing with Duck at our CD release party at the Bamboo Room, and eating barbecue at his Sarasota home with him, his wife June and manic AC/DC singer Brian Johnson are not-fade-away memories.
