Harry Waters had played before audiences before, but in 2002, he faced a different kind of crowd.
Waters had started his own career as a keyboardist in groups ranging from a Led Zeppelin cover band to a group called Hubble Deep Field. But the first time he stepped on stage in front of a mammoth crowd — the kind his father, Roger Waters, usually draws — it was quite different.
“The first couple of gigs, by far I was nervous,” the younger Waters said. “We were doing shows in South Africa, in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and there was definitely stage fright. But you get used to it pretty quickly.”
These days, Harry Waters is splitting his time on the road between his father’s tour — Roger Waters’ The Wall, playing the songs off Pink Floyd’s landmark 1979 LP — and a tour with his own jazz combo. He’ll be performing double duty in South Florida over the next few days — The Wall comes to Sunrise’s BankAtlantic Center Friday, while his jazz group will play Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale on Monday.
Harry said playing in front of the smaller crowds is much more nerve-wracking.
“It’s my music, so I’m out there in front of everyone,” Harry said in a telephone interview. “With The Wall I’m not really exposed. Plus it’s very easy to play something like The Wall. It’s much harder playing jazz, especially when you’re playing keyboards and you’re the lead instrument. But it’s more fun. It’s just different. Very different.”
Harry started out playing rock, but realized around 2000 that there was something he loved about jazz.
“I was 20, and I found out about (iconic jazz pianist) Oscar Peterson when I was 21,” he said.
And he knew even at that point that, for him, jazz was the way to go.
“Even before I started playing, I felt it was the best decision,” Harry said. “It’s something I really enjoyed to do, and who knows where it’ll lead.”
But he also is grateful to his father for giving him the chance to go on tour with him. Harry was first approached by Roger — the one-time bass-playing singer and songwriter of Pink Floyd — in 1999 to tour with him, but Harry turned him down because his own band was trying to make it big.
“Once I left that band, I told him, ‘Hey, listen, if you need me again, I’ll definitely say yes,’” Harry said.
And in 2002, Harry got the chance. Now, with The Wall, he’s playing the parts originally recorded by Richard Wright in 1980, and he’s always enjoyed the songs.
“I’ve loved this music ever since I was a kid,” Harry said. “I’d have to say my favorite song would be In The Flesh, Parts 1 and 2. I’ve particularly enjoyed playing those.”
