Neon Trees does not consider itself an overly political band. Which is why its members believe they’re the perfect headliners for Monday’s Rock The Vote concert at Boca Raton’s Mizner Park.
“We’re really excited. Some people might be surprised - we all have opinions but we’re not very showy with the political feelings that we do have,” says Tyler Glenn, lead singer of the Provo, Utah-based band, best known for “Everybody Talks” and “Animal.”
Their Mizner set is the opening act for the live telecast of the third and final debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Gov. Mitt Romney at nearby Lynn University.
“I think that because we’re not constantly sharing our world view through music, we have an opportunity through a show like this to be able to be a part of something. We’re not saying ‘This is what we want you to do.’ We let them decide who they want to vote for,” Glenn continues. “At the end of the day, we want people to remember that we are an entertainment band. But at the same time, even though we won’t be sharing who we’ll be voting for, we want to remind kids to allow their voices to be heard, to allow their votes to be counted and to share their opinions,” he says.
Rock The Vote, a long-standing non-partisan, non-profit organization that encourages political involvement from young people through pop culture, is presenting the event along with the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Xbox and the City of Boca Raton.
Glenn says that when the band was approached to participate, they “thought it was a cool concept. When I was a teenager, I definitely was more excited (about politics) after seeing Rock The Vote on MTV. I don’t think a lot of these kids are politically minded, and sometimes it takes a little more encouragement for kids to feel connected. It’s a cool idea to blend music and politics. It’s smart - I think that obviously we need to pay more attention to serious things. The concert’s..I wouldn’t call it a distraction, but it’s a way to get them to have their eyes open while enjoying something they’ve always enjoyed.”
Given the political divisiveness of the country, Glenn thinks the only backlash that Neon Trees might face “might be from someone who perhaps thinks they already know who they are gonna vote for. We’re a band from Utah, so maybe some people think that we’re automatically Romney fans. To us, this is more about playing a show and being a part of encouraging people to vote. It’ll be exciting to be right there watching the debate with a ton of people with different opinions.
“And at the end of the day there might be people who wouldn’t have considered going to a Neon Trees show, who will get to hear us play.”
