New CDs from Boynton, West Palm singers

By Bill Meredith

Special to the Palm Beach Post

Boynton Beach singer/songwriter Jason Colannino (jasoncolannino.com) shows new songwriting depth on “Lost in Vacation,” his third independent CD.

The chorus to the opening “A1A” recalls Steely Dan, and “Oil in the Water,” his vocal duet with Ricky Seigel, is clearly more topical than tropical.

Colannino’s vocal and guitar sounds are impeccable, as always, and the CD’s frequent love songs get nice contributions from guitarist Jeff Chafin and bassist Douglas Anderson (“I Need Your Love”), multi-instrumentalists Bob Taylor and Jeff Renza (“Captain”), and singing wife Kim Colannino on the closing duet of James Taylor’s “You Can Close Your Eyes.”

See Jason Colannino from 5-8 p.m. on Sundays at Rudy’s Stand Up Saloon, 9 N. J St., Lake Worth (561-602-5307), 7:30-11:30 p.m. on Mondays at Johnnie Brown’s, 301 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach, (561-243-9911), 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at The Sundy House, 106 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, (561-272-5678), and 2-5 p.m. on Thursdays at the Marriott Oceana Palms, 3200 N. Ocean Dr., Singer Island (561-227-3600).

West Palm Beach singer/guitarist Monty Warren (montywarren.net) lays down the retro-rock law with “Let’s Go To Therapy” (Swampgrass), a new disc that runs from raucous to rootsy. Lead guitarist/co-composer John Beemiller, bassist Scott Holthausen and drummer Dave Bartholemew thunder on the warp-speed opener “Scraped Off the Floor,” then downshift for the tongue-in-cheek title track with former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan.

Warren wears his Rolling Stones infatuation on his sleeve on “No Easy Way To Go,” and a quieter second half features the Neil Young-influenced “Icalyn” and ballad “W-O-R-D” (with backing vocals by Dayna Blitz and Artist Treece) before a rollicking closing cover of Mott the Hoople’s “Jerkin’ Crocus.”

Monty Warren’s CD release party set for “Let’s Go To Therapy” runs from 11 p.m.-midnight (after Black Finger; before the Mobile Homies) on Dec. 15 at Swampgrass Willy’s, 9910 Alt. A1A, Palm Beach Gardens, (561) 625-1555.
