Big menu makes Village Tavern a winner

MENU

The menu cover touts steaks, fish, burgers and pizza. You’ll find a little bit of everything. There are also 16 “appetizers and small plates.” Don’t be fooled by the word small. Even these portions are quite large.

ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere in the main dining room is simple at its best. Rows of low booths line the room so you can see from one end of the room to the other. There’s also a separate bar area that opens to outdoor tables.

OUR FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE

We ordered the cheesy bacon chips appetizer ($6.95), ribeye with salad (plus Caesar upgrade for $2.25 extra) and baked potato ($23.95) and Asian tuna salad ($13.95). My wife loved her salad, and while the steak was cooked just right (medium rare) and was tender, it didn’t have much flavor. Perhaps we’re just used to marinated steaks on our own grill. The hit was the cheesy bacon chips č a large plate full of hot, thinly sliced potatoes covered in bits of bacon, barbecue sauce and Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses.

REASON TO GO

If you’re just in the mood for an $8.95 burger, that’s fine. But you also can go more upscale with items such as the roasted lamb rib chops at $26.95. We were too full to try the dessert sampler (apple cobbler, Key lime pie and St. Barth’s chocolate torte č $7.95).

SERVICE

Our waiter was great. Drinks were filled regularly, and he had a great sense of humor when we joked about being the only folks in the room under 55!

NOISE LEVEL

The booths are low and the kitchen is open, so it can be noisy. But we held a conversation easily without screaming.

KID FRIENDLY

There’s no kids menu, but most children would be happy with the burgers, pizza or several of the appetizers.
