Shabu Shabu delivers adventurous menu

MENU

Although history might indicate otherwise, Korean and Japanese cuisine overlap comfortably here. There’s a long list of appetizers, a substantial sushi menu, Korean barbecue, grilled seafood, traditional Korean soup and noodle entrees, and shabu shabu, a Japanese variant on the hot pot tradition.

ATMOSPHERE

A sushi bar covers one wall and a row of booths lines the other in the narrow space. Tchotchkes from several cultures, lanterns, artwork and stuffed fish adorn walls and a wood-and-paper divider.

OUR FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE

I wanted to have the Korean barbecue, which you cook at the table under a vent, but there’s a minimum order of two entrees, more than I desired. I opted instead for an order of spicy pork ($13.95) and was not disappointed. Thinly sliced pork was marinated in a fiery sauce and sautéed with delicate, sliced vegetables. It was perfect over rice, a large portion accompanied by miso soup and traditional pickled vegetable dishes such as kimchee.

REASON TO GO

An adventurous menu that delves deeply into Korean cuisine, which is pretty rare in our region.

SERVICE

The night I visited, one man did it all — assembled the sushi, cooked and served. He warned me as I arrived that it would be 10 to 15 minutes before he could take my order, but once he did the meal was well-paced.

NOISE LEVEL

It was quiet and pleasant.

KID FRIENDLY

Yes, there are plenty of choices on the menu if they’re a little adventurous.
